Rum Diary hat on the bay

Hats2, please take note of the "hold" tags on the box. When a film is shot part of the the rental deal is to hold clothing for "principals" for a period of six months to be able to do retakes if necessary. It is imperative that the same exact hat /clothes be used in those re shoots so the costumer tags the exact clothing and lists the scenes in which the item appears, then attaches it to the item. Not all films have additional hats made based on the script. If there are no scenes needing doubles or risking damage there is normally only one hat needed. Film making is a business like any other and they do not spend money they don't have to.
So, bottom line, unless this seller is a total crook who has inside information of the industry and is clever as hell, this is most likely THE hat. As many here know I dealt with the industry, Colleen especially, so I'm not blowing smoke here. I actually own the hat used in Seabisquit and the only authentication I have for it is the "hold" tag on it. It's the only one needed along with my word.

Thank you, my concerns are simply put, that I have seen a many of scams on eBay, and would rather not see anyone even entertain getting "milked" out of money, and not per se, to start some negative war on this hat. On a side note, if I had the ability to contact someone I personally knew or had done business with, I would contact them and see if this hat was indeed, real, hum? I guess what I am saying, is that I do believe you have the contact information to get in touch with Ms. Atwood. I did what I could by sending an email to the "guild" and shared for the most part what was sent back to me.

I hope you can understand my concerns are not based upon throwing anyone under the bus, from the Lounge, just wanting to confirm this hat being real or a fake.

Update: The individual that lists the hat is going to try to add some information to help verify the hat's authenticity, per a email to my Wife via eBay. When that information is made available, it will be posted here.

As you requested I reached out not to Colleen but rather to the seller who, as it turns out, is a trusted friend & colleague in the vintage business. They have not "outed" themselves so I will keep who they are private but can tell you they are highly respected in the biz, have dealt with the industry for more years that I can remember and are the real deal. This is THE hat used in the film, period. I was sure of it with the scene tags but this is the icing. Should you decide you wanted it I'm sure they would provide more info but are not willing to do more for someone that is not going to purchase anyway, authentic or not.
So Hats, you can sleep easy. There is no chance this is a scam and the world is safe again.

As an aside they were rolling laughing that you would cite the receptionist at the Union office as a source.

I am glad you made some contact and cleared it up. Glad someone got a laugh as well.

Role reversed, if you wanted to buy a vintage fender, and wanted to know if it was really a custom shop guitar, I would have no problem directly calling someone I know that is a spokesperson for Fender to find out what is or is not.

The inquiry I made to the guild, produced only the response I shared within the posts. And no, I have zero interest in that straw hat. But I do know a few individuals that have some interest. I can pass along your conclusions to them.

I am glad its winter here because i really like that style hat and was going to buy one like it (i saw a similar style here in some 1950s advertisement someone posted) but now were i to buy it i'm sure everyone would be assuming it would just be to ape on Johnny Depp's look. Also, its a great hat, and it suits him really well, but unfortunately, we don't all look like johnny depp or movie stars, so what looks good on him, may not look good on me. I find that concept still hard to accept and may at times wear something insistently that doesn't suit me, just because i like the style but there comes a time to concede. I'll let the buzz blow over before getting another straw.

I wouldn't worry about that. Just wear what you like and create your own style. I pay no attention to the current popularity of the various items in my wardrobe. I wear what I like; whether the fashion of the day terms them in or out is of no concern to me.

I too like the style, and have been looking for one for years. I did buy the Scala Sam Snead, but returned it. Brim was too small, and the coconut straw too coarse.

There was someone a couple of years ago here on the Lounge that said they were going to be offering a proper hat, but it never developed into anything.
