Agree with all. It is a utilitarian military garment not a modern fashion piece.

Rule #1 when wearing a peacoat: Never, Ever wear it open. They are always buttoned. If it is too warm to wear it buttoned, wear something else.

The sleeve length is perfect. The hem length should end right below your butt cheeks. This one looks as if it may already be a bit short. You certainly don't want it any shorter.

What you have posted is a an excellent fit. Quit worrying about it. You have nailed it.

You probably don't know it, but the above advice comes from the guy who wrote the book on peacoats. There is no one in the world who knows more about Navy issue peacoats than he does.

The arms are a little long. You might be able to get away with a smaller size if you don’t layer underneath. I own the Schott slim fit version because the regular one is too boxy for me.

Sleeves are a little top long, but its good otherwise. Coats like that shouldn't fit as slim as a leather jacket anyway imo.

I bought this in 1992 at flea market. Based on what I picked up from this thread, made in 1984? I didn't think it was authentic navy issue because I remember it having a "russian" patch on one arm which i removed. But this tag looks real deal. Been sitting collecting dust. Fit is pretty good. Little long and sleeves could use some tapering, but going to try and get some wears this year. Very solid coat in brand new like condition.

Tag looks genuine military. Date is 1984.
My recommendation is don't mess with alterations or anything, because if you re-sell it someday then it won't match the tag. These things aren't supposed to fit slim like fashion peacoats. Just wear a thicker sweater!

thanks. The body is about right. I could wear nice sweater with it and still be comfortable. But the sleeves are comical. I think the L part screwed me. They're 1 to 1.5 inches too long and the opening is just crazy. Popeye forearm type build : ) So I figured if I was going to shorten sleeve, might as well taper some. Unless this thing is worth big money as is, I want to make it more wearable. Will definitely sleep on it though because you're right, it is what it's supposed to be. Other thought is to buy a used Schott slim fitting one, but I kind of like this one. It's the one piece of clothing I've had (over 30 years now) that has gone everywhere with me and survived move after move, and several iterations of spring cleanings. But I don't think I've worn in past 5 years plus, especially after dropping about 20 lbs.

DD's quote 2218 - THIS EXACTLY!!! I myself have posted this before. This reg puts the length right about at the upper thumb joint or about a half inch above the knuckles when arms down in a natural hang (not at attention with arms fully extended down and thumb against the outside trouser seam, but natural hang ) It is not supposed to wear like a civilian overcoat, which would cover the suit jacket and dress shirt right at the wrist, but a much lower, more practical mil length. I wear a size 15.5 x 34.5 dress shirt and I have had all my vintage and modern size 38 and 40 peacoat sleeve length lowered by one inch.

This is a civilian style "pea coat." I have no knowledge of them.

This ought to be in the main peacoat thread, but with the new format, I evidently have lost the ability to move it.
