Here are better pics of this one, now that I have my hands on it. If the ribbon is original to the hat, it has been flipped upside down. It does have the frayed edge. The leather band is also fairly old. I'm not sure if either is original to the hat, but they've both been there a good long while.

They may look similar at first glance, but the squatter has a flanged brim, this one's flat all the way around. This Stetson Boss of the Plains has a low, straight sided crown blocking, which is really too low to take any crease other than a shallow campaign/park ranger-esque crease.
