Squatter

CRH said:
:eusa_clap Tell us more about it, Dundee. It looks like it arrived open crowned yes? Imperial felt I presume?

Let's see that bad boy on your nog!

The squatter arrived with an open crown and long oval as requested. It is made from super fine fur. This type fur took to shaping very well. It is an unlined hat, that I hope will be ok for 70s degree weather.

That's a good looking hat on you, Dundee. I'll have to remember to request an open crown on my next Squatter ;).

How do those 2 compare Dundee?

The Squatter has a little wider brim, shorter crown and is not lined. It is made of superfine fur. It is not quite as nice as the Camp Draft but it will make a nice addition to my small collection. I hope, it being unlined, that it will make a hat I can wear in temperatures into the seventies. I don't think it will bear anything higher. It will offer very good protection from the elements. I once had a Drover made for the same type fur and it held up very well in heavy rains.

Very nice sir; I am envious of you who find such nice hats at thrift shops and garage sales. I'll be interested to see what you do with it.

Indeed! Michaelshane and ScottF nice scores :eusa_clap.

Akubra Lawson

I've had this hat a couple months and I've promised CRH in another thread I would post pics. I ordered this directly from Australia and did the three month wait. I believe the color is Loden. Without further ado, here is a Heritage Collection Akubra Lawson.

By the way, it's not splotchy colored - There's some sunlight dappling in the outside shots.

...

I like it and it's my size! Classic gentleman's outback hat that is.

Fulfilled my oath - bought a Stetson

Having bought three Akubras in the last year, I promised to buy a Stetson this year, and today I did. New Open Road, from The Wharf in Ventura, CA.

Yes, the images are reversed via computer camera. I expect to make this silverbelly beauty my summer hat, so it ought to be disgusting with sweat stains before too long... ;-) Z

Edit: my wife just got home and said, "it looks like it doesn't fit, the color is all wrong with your skin tone. It's going to get dirty." I like it anyway. Z

CRH - Not to feed the addiction or anything, but I definitely see a Lawson in your future...

Z - you pull off the Alpine/Cattleman's bash with aplomb! It suits you extraordinarily well. Nice Open Road...

My fiancée goes to an outdoor flea market in Lund, a city near us, every Saturday morning (she usually gets there at 6:30 - 7:00 AM and spends two hours or so there). Just over a week ago, she spotted a man selling a few hats, and two of them were in my size! She offered 120kr (£10 / $16 US) for the two, and got them!

The first one is a black fedora, with a 2 1/4 inch brim and a 5 inch crown, which is currently open. It feels so huge on my head, and I can't manage to get a good crease in it. The snap in the brim is a little weak, unfortunately.

The second one is also black, but smaller (so I'm using the term trilby). It's much better quality - The felt feels much better and the brim has a fantastic snap to it. It's sold under the Dalton brand, but due to the sweatband, it was made in 1949-1990, and I believe that by 1949 the Dalton name was just that, a name, nothing more. The lining says "DALTON HATS: American Imports".

I also was directed to a hat box by my fiancée's mother, and bought it for next to nothing.

Yesterday, I went to the flea market with my fiancée, and the gentleman who was selling the hats was there again, with more hats! He had two Borsalinos and a Christy's of London, but they were all size 7 (I'm a 7 3/8). I talked to the gentleman and asked him about his hats, and he says he has quite a lot at home. I was unfortunately in a rush, but I'm going to try talking to him the next time I can and find out about his selection. I will take a camera and photograph his hats if I can!

That first one is not supposed to have a crease in it,or a snap to the brim,it's also supposed to be stiff. It's a bowler.

It's not a bowler at all. I also own a bowler and they are very different. (However, I do see that the photo can give the illusion of the hat being a bowler, that was unintended!)

The fedora is made from a very soft malleable felt (unlike a bowler, which is stiffened and can't have the shape changed without great difficulty), the brim does snap at the front - just not that well - while the brim of a bowler is also stiffened greatly, and the brim points down at the front (when snapped), level-ish at the sides, and upwards at the back, which is very unlike a bowler. It also had a teardrop crease when I received it, just done very badly.

Compare the following two photos, the first being the recently aquired fedora, the latter being my bowler:

Yes, the first one has a bowler like crown, but that's because I opened it up myself because it was creased very badly.

Beaver Brand - All Beaver Thin-Ribbon Strat!

Recently, Duane (thefedorastore.com) put Beaver Brand on sale. Sale began just before Easter, and the sale prices were still in effect as of yesterday. I could not resist this 'kangaroo' color all beaver in the thin ribbon - a classic Stratoliner clone, done new, and all beaver:

Duane's writeup indicated that the felt body came from the same source that Borsalino uses, but he is not sure of that source. Since Beaver Brand does not felt their own, likely a foreign source for the body.

I am WELL PLEASED with this hat. The menu included some customization (2 1/2in brim, bound edge). Duane states that in his opinion these are the BEST factory hats made today, and I will agree with that. Fair price, great Strat!
