Recently, Duane (thefedorastore.com) put Beaver Brand on sale. Sale began just before Easter, and the sale prices were still in effect as of yesterday. I could not resist this 'kangaroo' color all beaver in the thin ribbon - a classic Stratoliner clone, done new, and all beaver:

I am WELL PLEASED with this hat. The menu included some customization (2 1/2in brim, bound edge). Duane states that in his opinion these are the BEST factory hats made today, and I will agree with that. Fair price, great Strat!

That looks like a great hat... tempted myself now!

Great hat, Barrowjh! I too have been tempted to try one of these very hats, but as I already have two on order from Art, I'll have to wait. I've been dying to see pictures of the Beaver Brand customs and I'm sure a lot of others here have been, too.
That factory bash looks just about perfect in my opinion!

Lokar, an interesting hat that first one is. I do believe it to be a fedora (you can see where the old creases used to be) and it could be a similar style to the hat below on the left.

The brim isn't supposed to be snapped like normal fedoras. Hope this helps.

Lokar, The brim of this hat was never intended to be snapped. The brim has a D'Orsay curl, a very sharp curl created by a professional hatter using a curling shackle. The brim is folded over on itself, almost like a welted edge, and then loosened slightly to produce this very sharp, tight curl. It takes a seasoned professional with lots of skill and experience to make a D'Orsay curl.

This type of brim is precisely what is seen on bowlers and derbies and on some Homburgs. IMHO, you ought to reconsider the bowler/derby hypothesis. Bowlers and derbies were not always stiff and, of course, they soften with age.

That photo was to be compared with the first one I posted - The picture you quoted is indeed a bowler (and it's still very hard!) I've edited my post to clarify that as it wasn't particularly clear.

Thank you though, especially for the term "D'Orsay curl" - I've never known how to refer to it!

That's very interesting, and looks exceptionally similar to the hat. Once I've got the crown done I'll try wearing it with the brim up and see how it appears, but I believe you have solved it. Thanks!

Duh, sorry it took me a while to get that through my thick head. Now I agree with you and Thunder21 that the hat in question is not a bowler or derby. Could very well be that it was intended to be worn with the brim up, like FDR:

Yes, the images are reversed via computer camera. I expect to make this silverbelly beauty my summer hat, so it ought to be disgusting with sweat stains before too long... ;-) Z

Edit: my wife just got home and said, "it looks like it doesn't fit, the color is all wrong with your skin tone. It's going to get dirty." I like it anyway. Z

Unexpected gift

The day after I got my Open Road, I visited my Dad and he pulled this out of the closet and gave it to me. It's a size 7, and I wear something between a 7-1/4 and 7-3/8. I might be able to steam/stretch it up to a 7 1/4. I'm sure going to try. ;-) Z

I don't know but my first reaction was that I might consider voting for that guy. I'm a sucker for a classic Cattleman Fedora.

I think its great! Western Open Roads were/are my favorite hats of all time and I think it looks fine. You'll enjoy it in style, I'm sure.

That really does seem to be a very nice hat. The custom features are great and the crease looks quite well done.

Thanks, gtdean.

So, John -- that is one nice lookin' lid. Can you tell us your reaction to the feel/finish of the felt? How about the quality of the sweat? Is it a dress weight, or more of a medium weight? All comments welcome! :) I really like that color, as well. Enjoy!

Cheers,
JtL
