A package from Goodwill arrived today. A two hat lot with a box to boot! And the shipping was only 12 bucks.
This isn't the one that caught my eye. More on it later. This one, however, is a perfectly good gardening hat. Or, as we say here in the Emerald Triangle, a sun-shiner's bonnet. Or, maybe that's just me.

The crown is 3 3/4 inches, and the brim is 3 inches. 100 grams of stiff, durable feeling straw. The punti sizing is interesting.
Not bad for an also-in-the-net kind of catch... :)

That's a nice looking catch, John. Particularly like the telescope crown.

What does it say on the badge on the leather band?

The Borsalino arrived today. It was in both "better" and "worse" condition than I anticipated from the pictures. The blocking was still good for the most part, however there were a few stains that needed sanding. From the Label inside & thanks to this post, I can date the hat to 1961 - 1965.

The hat is now clean and steamed, but the lighting is not favourable ATM for capturing the colour as I perceive it. I will take pictures tomorrow. It seems like a nice hat & it fits me perfectly. The felt certainly is quite "malleable", which fits what I heard about Borsalinos.

I dont know why Hats in my pictures always look so much more dirty/ratty, but IRL the hat looks very clean. I'm quite pleased with how it turned out.

Since the felt is so soft, its possible to simply shape the crown & pinches on the fly. Subtle pinches like in picture 1, or more dramatic like in picture 3 & 4.

I think you got yourself a good one there. Dattero is a lovely deep brown colour with reddish tones. The brim binding and the ribbon treatment are wonderful. Score!
