Lookin' good, Randall. Great recovery.

It was requested to see how this Dunlap turned out so here it is.
Record breaking restoration—time wise, for me anyway.

Not an easy one, since I tried, successfully, to keep it’s 7 1/2 size and original brim and crown measurements. While all the trying to hide the “sweatband scorched” felt caused from leaching of the chemicals used in tanning leather, at least, that’s my guess to explain the mystery.
I’m sure you all have seen or experienced this felt fading phenomenon. You can see how bad and how high it was in the original eBay listing photo below. Very unfortunate, but I had to use a little bit wider ribbon in order to cover the scorching. I so wanted to use the original ribbon as it was a cool color. Ah, but using a burgundy dog eared pleated bow helps allay the disappointment.
And anyway, I’ll can still use the original ribbon on a different hat later.

Doesn’t quite fit, but one day it’ll sell higher than it would’ve had I made it fit me, nevertheless for now, it’ll be one of my favs on windless days.

Will eventually stitch in a homeless Dunlap liner—once I uncover its whereabouts in piles of hat boxes.

I’m working on getting a Triple R Hattery logo made for new hats, but I do hope to focus on restorations for now. Once I get everything needed for new hat builds I’ll let you guys know.

Disney Hats - Brown Unlined
5 1/2 Crown Open (about 4 1/4 as shaped)
Oil skin crown protector
3/4 Brown Grosgrain Ribbon
2 1/4 Front - 2 1/8 Sides/Back Brim with Raw Edge

This is one of those hats that made me hit the Buy It Now button as fast as lightning. I don’t think I’ve come across an unlined summer weight Disney before and it really called out to me. In hand it has lived up to my hopes… except maybe the brim is a tad shorter than I my expectations. I suspect it is possible it met up with a rounding jack for a brim trim at sometime in its history. The brim is slightly dimensional at 2 1/4 to the front and 2 1/8 on the sides and rear. The crown is still nice and tall reaching 5 1/2 open. With its 3/4 ribbon it gives it a sort of Playboy vibe.. and I suspect with the proportions it is likely to work it’s way in as a regular in my grab and go pile.

Italy ain't got nothing on Ecuador! At my local flea market on this beautiful fall day in Texas, I found a sombrero in a box! This is the ever popular and very rare A model complete with the hat band. Regularly $5, I brought this beauty home today for only $2.50. Who knew hat collecting could be such a fun and inexpensive hobby!

New entries in the hat collection (I'm well over an intervention, but I'm not saying).

Brummel's Castor fedora in black. Size 57 with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown at 10cm at the center dent. Weighs 117 grams. Never seen a Brummel's Castor before so I had to get this one. Well made hat but nothing spectacular. Liner went missing.

Joseph E Ward homburg in black. Size 56 with the bound brim at 6,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. This one has a contrasting ribbon and binding, but it's hard to say if that was intentional or that they just lost their colour over time. I like the effect though. Sold by Kioes of Luxembourg. Georges Kioes was the successor of Waldbillig somewhere between 1935 and 1962. So this hat is centrainly before 1962. Late forties or early fifties would be my guess. The brim is still a bit uneven, likely because of the way at was stored.

Between the last two it's a toss-up really. Let's start with another black hat and put those behind us.
Penn-Craft bowler hat. Size 56 with the bound brim at 4,8cm and the crown at 12cm. Vented in top. I've found more of these over the years, the hats that were imported and pre-war attempts by Stetson to get a place in the crowded European market. Without exception those hats are of excellent quality, as is this one.

Last one (and then I'm off for my brother's birthday).

Borsalino longhair fedora in Rutenio colour. Size 57 with the overwelt and double stitched brim at 6cm and the crown at 10,5cm at the center dent. Cellophane covering of the liner and it's a no brainer.
What can I say? It's a beauty.

I don't know what Stetson was doing in the 30s and 40s, and I can find precisely little on the history of Penn Craft, but those are very well constructed hats and every one with a silky smooth finish. We may have to make a deal, Stefan...hint, hint!

I don't know what Stetson was doing in the 30s and 40s, and I can find precisely little on the history of Penn Craft, but those are very well constructed hats and every one with a silky smooth finish. We may have to make a deal, Stefan...hint, hint!

I have been trying to gently motivate Phil @hambone71 into his first bowler. All I can say, Phil, is if I could only have one bowler, this would be the one!
