Stratton The Lawman - Genuine Milan Green
5 inch center dent crown
3 inch brim
3/4 green grosgrain ribbon

My curiosity and the beautiful deep green color drew my interest to this Milan straw uniform hat from Stratton Hats called The Lawman. It’s Another one that is a bit too big. But this one only a size or two. When you remove the chin strap it does let go some of its law enforcement uniform vibes… just a bit. The grommet holes are not that intrusive and this one does not have a badge hole as do many of these type of hats.

I’m probably inclined to move it along… but being it is not too far off in size.. I might stick some sizer material in there and see how it goes. I wonder how the straw might react some steam if I tried to steam in a front pinch.

Most times ya lose. Sometimes ya win!
When buying a hat without enough info and from the listing it looked to be another greenish felt, but happy it’s not!! Love the ribbon color, too!
Didn’t know it’s size from the eBay listing but for a $49 Dunlap size it was a couldn’t lose—and appeared to be a bigger size. It is. 7 1/2!
Needs cleaning and reblocking, but I know a guy.
This probably should be in the eBay thread but I was very recently there with one.
Should turn out nice and be a favorite, and I’m pretty sure I have a Dunlap liner hangin around somewhere.
As usual, with my camera, the underside pic is the felt’s true pearl or light dove gray color.

Nice catch, Randall. Sometimes, you just have to go with your instinct.

With your eye and your talent, I'd say, your instinct is second to none.

Looking forward to seeing your improvements on this one.

Thanks a lot for the kind words, bro!
Gonna try and fast track this one. I have four hats of my own that are in different stages of completion, but they’ll have to wait, including a cool spiral stitched brim 40s Mallory!
Which is another one I wish was done already. Wish you could come across the pond and help me.

Got a really nice one for Dr. Randy going too.

That is a heck of a score, Randall.
Thanks, Joe!
With this Dunlap I now have all the major brands I’ve ever hoped to find along with plenty off brands—with multiples in the major-major brands. I’m sure you’ve got em all covered better than I.
We’ve come a long way with our collections in the last 4 years.
For me, it’s been a blast and you were a big part of it!
Lookin forward to four more!

But I have to say, Mr Blare, I’m still jealous of your Musketeer! :)

That is a nice hat. Those are really good hats and very durable but hard to form. I seldom pass one up.

It was requested to see how this Dunlap turned out so here it is.
Record breaking restoration—time wise, for me anyway.

Not an easy one, since I tried, successfully, to keep it’s 7 1/2 size and original brim and crown measurements—all the while trying to hide the “sweatband scorched” felt caused from leaching of chemicals used in tanning leather, at least, that’s my guess to explain the mystery.
I’m sure you all have seen or experienced this felt fading phenomenon. You can see how bad and how high it was in the original eBay listing photo below. Very unfortunate, but I had to use a little bit wider ribbon in order to cover the scorching. I so wanted to use the original ribbon as it was a cool color. Ah, but using a burgundy dog eared pleated bow helps allay the disappointment.
And anyway, I’ll can still use the original ribbon on a different hat later.

Doesn’t quite fit, but one day it’ll sell higher than it would’ve had I made it fit me, nevertheless for now, it’ll be one of my favs on windless days.

Will eventually stitch in a homeless Dunlap liner—once I uncover its whereabouts in piles of hat boxes.
