After reading for years about how dark Akubra's Carbon Grey was, I thought I'd find out for myself:

MxRHH2t.jpg

Not as dark as I anticipated. I mean, it's dark, but not...oh, who cares? I think it's a nice shade of dark grey with good contrast against the black ribbon. It's also the longest I've waited for an Akubra, nearly six months. Surely not a record, but longer than the four month wait as advised when I ordered it.

Nice looking hat. Glad it finally arrived!

Also discovered by and reserved for Panos:
A. Berteil - St. Germain black fedora with original hat box
with the open crown at 13 cm and the raw edge brim at 5 cm.
The fur felt is relatively thick but as Daniele said some time ago:
very soft in touch "and with a peachy surface".
The hat box is interesting because apparently another big name
of the French hat industry was once stored in it as well.

Very nice. Berteil isn't that easy to find.

A few hats came in this week. First one is this oldie.

Extra Light backbow fedora in woolfelt. Size 55 (but with a small nudge made it fit me) with the raw edge brim at 5cm and the crown at 11,5cm at the center dent. Belgian seller had it listed as a bowler hat, because it was open crown. The hat is pre-war and probably Belgian made. With some steam it holds its shape very well. Certainly not a refined hand and the brim was cut by hand with scissors, because it feels somewhat uneven. The crease that was showing makes me think it had a crease clips once. I gave it this crease because it seemed to fit its age. Extra light for a woolfelt of the time maybe, but still weighs 134 grams. A nice woollen survivor.

Willoughby homburg in black. Size 56 with the modest brim at 5cm and the crown at 11,5cm at the center dent. It doesn't say anything other than fur felt, but I suspect this not a rabbit fur. I'm thinking nutria, because of the way the felt feels and shapes. It has a fantastic hand to it. The finishing is top notch on this one and I really like the classy looking liner. It has the Willoughby label inside of it, so no obvious source. Weighs 140 grams, so not a lightweight.

Adding to my dirty hat collection. A Raw Hide Felts “Spirit of the West” made by Byer-Rolnick / Resistol. 6” x 3-1/2” with bound brim. Felt is pretty easily shaped. Not sure of the age, but an earlier B-R with the flat-top “O” font. The store had this name from 1918 - 1967. Now Fincher’s White Front Store.

Wegener "Luxor" "Manhattan", 58 cm, possibly very early 1960s very late 1950s. I picked this up because it was NOS, an interesting model name and has major (over welt) brim flange. The felt has a great finish and color. Also very pliable so easily dry creases.

Interesting find, Steve. I come across "Luxor" branded hats on a regular basis. I wonder if those are all Wegener made.
