Stetson Official Boy Scouts Hat

Stetson Official Boy Scouts Hat
Olive Drab to Brownish felt
5 3/4 to Montana Peak (about 5 open)
Starburst vent patterns on the sides and back
1 1/8 Antiqued Pewter grosgrain ribbon
2 1/2 brim with double stitched edge

Was curious to take a look at this Stetson Official Boy Scouts hat. I’m guessing based on the sweat and size tag this one is 1960 or 70s. The color is between olive drab and light brown depending on the light. It seemed very to happy remember and quickly reshaped into a Montana peak shape which reaches to about 5 3/4 inches... but also looks nice in a Fedora shape. After some heavy brushing and a little scrubbing with a wet rag the felt cleaned up nicely. Some cool vent holes in the sides and rear along with a double stitched edge 1/2 inch brim. Maybe just add a shoe lace chin strap. A fun little hat that could make a nice hiking photography hat.

Steve, with the sides being lifted so much can you tell if the brim is actually wider than other comparable bowlers?

P. & C. Habig Wien "Grand Prix", 57 cm, 110 grams, late 1890s - 1900. The Felt is very thin and light weight with a great smooth finish. The black liner with gold embossing is striking. The textured sweatband is also very light weight with the "Patent Ventilator" holes. There was a newspaper (from September 4, 1903) spacer behind the rear of the sweatband. I am thinking this was able made for the Paris 1900 World Exposition or was made the year after P. & C. Habig Wien winning the "Grand Prix" at the Paris 1900 World Exposition. I took some photos wearing it so the curved form will be more apparent. This is one of my best Stiff Felt finds.

Newspaper Spacer, Berliner Börsen-Zeitung, Friday, the 4th. September 1903. (The seller told me that the Melone belonged to a Banker in Greiz, Germany so that explains the use of the Berliner Börsen-Zeitung Financial Newspaper as a spacer.)

P. & C. Habig Wien - Berlin Catalog, possibly mid 1890s to early 1900s.

Similar Stiff Felt Forms, Also P. & C. Habig Wien Crest with "Patent Ventilator"

They're both interesting in their own way. The most interesting thing of all, though, is the box. That's what I was going after.

Randy, In this case the front and back Brim (no curl present) is ~ 2 1/4 inches and the mid side width of the Brim is ~ 2 1/2 inches if you include from the curl which is about where the Binding starts. The only way to know for sure is to flatten the brim out. I don't think I have any details on how Brims were cut for Stiff Felts but I can check. This Stiff Felt also has a front to back curve which you can see in the examples in the P. & C. Habig Wien Catalog I posted. There might be some other examples here but probably most curves are from over stretching. You can tell because there will Brim distortion at the front and rear.

And finally a Resistol WAR back-bow. Listed as a ladies hat (and came with a scarf). There was also a couple of complete-with-insert hat boxes (Stetson and Dobbs). All of the hats coming from former local stores was a bonus!

Found this Panizza Kanguroo for 16 euro incl. shipment. I couldn't let it go I think the Panizza logo has glued on it, but who cares?? ;-)

I don't listen to my advice either! And I'm guessing I'm more than waist deep in them. Hard to resist a good hat. Nice catches, Steve.

A new one added to the fold. The Holborn hat. Lords hat in black, size 58 with the brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. As it came in a rather fetching Stetson hat box, I thought it was American made at first, but it's probably English. Holborn being the legal centre of London the style fits. Liner and textured sweatband suggest an early hat, likely late thirties. Could be forties as well though.

This is the Stetson box it came with (and is part of the reason I bought it).

Another pickup from this week.
Fléchet 7X foulard fedora in black. Size 56, with the raw edge brim at 6cm and the crown at 11cm at the center dent. This is an early Fléchet. The crown patch is embroidered and still has the "B. Fléchet" name. The sweatband has a twenties/thirties art deco styling to it, which is what sold it to me (didn't know the size when I bought it; French sellers usually don't answer questions very well - if at all).

A couple of hats from the outlet in Garland. That place has been very busy the last two times I was there. Mostly a cowboy hat crowd but I scored a couple of fedoras. A Stratoliner in natural and a Dobbs Rosebud in cognac (looks like milan wheat) in hemp straw. Cannot find anything on a hemp Rosebud online.
