Money well spent, Joe. It wears its scars with pride I'd say.

Mallory Century Derby/Bowler

View attachment 324732

Mallory Century Derby/Bowler
5 inch crown
1 1/8 grosgrain ribbon
2 1/8 front 1 7/8 side bound brim to curl
140 grams

This may be about the most well spent $3.95 I have made. This Mallory Century Derby I am estimating to be from about 1929 to 1934 based on its logo design and United Hatters of North America tag. If anyone has any more insight let me know. The sellers photos clear showed it a bit worse the wear, being quite dirty and it’s sweat band half way torn out and frayed brim binding... so as expected... that was how it arrived. A very heavy brushing, tape patting, finger nail scratching and serious lint rollering cleaned the felt up nicely. For now I reattached the sweatband using some gorilla tape and it seems to be working nicely. It actually fits like a glove... as long as it’s perfectly straight. Which I imagine is the case with most firm felts like these. I was surprised to see it weighs in at 140 grams... as when it came out of the box... the first thing I noticed is it felt light as air in my hands. So I guess it’s a fit trim 140 grams. :) In comparison my other bowler is a Cavanagh equestrian bowler which tips the scales at about 280g twice the weight of this one. I really love the shape and profile as well as it’s nice tight brim curl. The frayed brim binding to me gives it some character and I’m keen to leave it as is. I believe I’ll be wearing this as a casual grab a beer derby in honor @Hurricane Jack style... if he doesn’t mind. ;)

Nice bowler, Joe. The brim looks wider in the pictures than your specs. Optical illusion, I guess :)

P. & C. Habig Wien "Grand Prix Paris", 57 cm, 110 grams, late 1890s - 1900. The Felt is very thin and light weight with a great smooth finish. The black liner with gold embossing is striking. The textured sweatband is also very light weight with the "Patent Ventilator" holes. There was a newspaper (from September 4, 1903) spacer behind the rear of the sweatband. I am thinking this was able made for the Paris 1900 World Exposition or was made the year after P. & C. Habig Wien winning the "Grand Prix" at the Paris 1900 World Exposition. I took some photos wearing it so the curved form will be more apparent. This is one of my best Stiff Felt finds.

PS: I have to look into this black depth again and again.
You have to post this in the Lovely Liners: Großartig!

This one is fantastic, Steve!
It looks even more awesome and
better preserved than in the seller's pictures!
And it fits and looks great on you!

Now I'm a little jealous that I have not struck,
because I thought that is certainly much too small ... ;)
Matt, Thank you! It's in great condition. Took a chance with that hand written size. I lucked out with this one.

Matt, Thanks again. The liner is really fantastic. The contrast between the black and gold is striking and the P. & C. Habig Wien Crest is regal. The textured sweatband is also really great. I haven't seen anything like it before. Paper thin but very supple.

By the way the seller told me that the Melone belonged to a Banker in Greiz, Germany so that explains the use of the Berliner Börsen-Zeitung Financial Newspaper as spacer.

Oh, my days, Bob! Four great hats. Congrats.

And finally a Resistol WAR back-bow. Listed as a ladies hat (and came with a scarf). There was also a couple of complete-with-insert hat boxes (Stetson and Dobbs). All of the hats coming from former local stores was a bonus!

Who wouldn't want that one, Bob? Great catch.

Four new hats from a local auction (that was, unfortunately, on-line and worldwide so I had competition). No shipping though! I took a chance that the 7-3/8 LO and ELO would work for me — and they all fit great!

First up is the one I really wanted — a Ecuadorian Panama Hat Company Supernatural Genuine Italian DeLuxe Milan.

Telescope crease, wide ribbon, back bow, pork pie look, oh my, you hit the jackpot with those four, Bob.
