Weather hasn't been kind recently to take some pictures of the newly arrived hats. Today things looked better. First one.
Wotan homburg in black. Size 57 with the brim at 6cm and the crown 10,5cm at the center dent. This one has me stumped about its age. As Norse and Germanic mythology was embraced by the nazis, it was at the very least frowned upon in the post-war years. So I think a manufacturer wouldn't choose this as a brand name like Wotan (the Germanic equivalent of Odin) until at least the mid to late sixties. It looks earlier than that though (liner is still stitched in for example). Looking at the liner logo I think Wegener may be the manufacturer. A hat called Wotan: had to have it.

Super find, Stefan. I'd have bought it just for the W in Wotan on the sweat. Very impressive scrolls. Those suggest to me pre 60s, too. What does the liner logo look like?

Thanks, Steve. I'm glad it was still there, because I didn't bring it the first time I saw it. Liner looks like this.

Our fellow lounger and Italian friend Daniele may have a secret entry to an ancient hoard of GB Borsalino fu Lazzaro hats. And he's willing to share them, bless him. The Italian Postal services seemed to think it was of national cultural importance and took their sweet time to let the package go, but in the end it made it north to me.
GB Borsalino fu Lazzaro lords hat in black. Not exactly a lords hat or a lobbia, but more a soft felt hat with curled overwelt brim edge, but it looks like a lords hat. Brim at a generous 6,5cm and crown at 12cm at the center dent. Unlined but it may have had a liner in the past, because there are no crown patch glue marks to be found. The model is called Paris and the felt is everything you hope a pre-war GB Borsalino to be. Oh, and it has shark gills too. So many thanks to Daniele and his hoard (or his time-machine).

Ja, I remember we talked about it a month or so back. Fantastic it was still there. For me, the liner logo has a late art deco feel to it. Your Wotan could well be late 30s going by the liner and sweat logo.

Yes, that and the stressing of the German manufacture ("Bestes deutsches Erzeugnis") has me thinking the same, but the styling and some of the elements, like the plastic liner covering and the "imprägnol imprägniert" feel a bit more modern to me. It's a puzzler.

It is indeed, Stefan. But the puzzle doesn't take away from the desirable nature of the hat.

This one has been posted before by @Daniele Tanto, who found it and kindly added it to the Italian-Dutch hat exchange program. This is the original posting:

It arrived this week and I took some pictures myself. First off I, like Daniele, am convinced it was made by Cappellificio Cervo. The similarity between this one both in the felt itself and the label of another Cervo is so strong that it has to be from that manufacturer. The wide overwelt had me puzzling, but I think Daniele is on the money again with his theory that this was a curled brim before, which was flattened. I am considering to ask my hatter to bring back the curl in it, because I think it would suit the hat.
The size is a probably 57, no matter what the label says, with the overwelt brim at 6cm and the crown 11,5cm at the center dent.

The felt is absolutely incredible; hard to explain if you've never handled one. Most likely this was supposed to be worn brim up. I mixed to brim up and brim down shots a bit to give you an idea.

Allow me to say that I am happy, extremely happy. The hats arrived in the Netherlands after a trip that suffered a couple of big delays and jams that made me angry. The hats are in good hands and appreciated for their quality and age, this is a point of honor for the Italian hats production that can be appreciated even after almost a hundred years. It is increasingly difficult to find hats of proven quality and age, I have been lucky, but I also apply my principles of price and choice. Having said that, I thank Stefan for his patience and generosity.

That is a very nice lot of new hats you have there, Stefan. The Wotan labeling is sweet. And they all look like really great felts.

Very happy with this find. Pretty much mint condition except for the ink smearing on the tip logo. Thin and dense felt. It's started raining here, so a few water spots now. Hopefully the Swans Down Finish will shrug them off.

Wow, wow, wow. Just received this Mallory Fifteen from Bob. Not wearing it today, but I wanted to share it real quick with my FL friends.

Sure it has battle scars, but to mess with this hat, other than a good steaming/brushing, would be a crime. The felt is amazing! Thank you Bob!

Thanks, Max. There actually is a strong connection between Wotan/Odin and hats. He is described as wearing a broad brimmed hat when walking the earth, which he would do to learn all he could to prepare for Ragnarök. He sometimes would overhear what us humans had to say whilst sitting on his white horse Sleipnir standing on the roof. Now that image has crept over to our own Sinterklaas figure, who would be seen on his horse (called Amerigo by the way) on rooftops as well. He in turn is the inspiration for Santa Claus, the fat bloke with the reindeer, who was designed for children. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
Fascinating stuff is mythology.
