Here's an interesting piece I picked up this week. Atlantis velour in black. Raw edge brim at 6cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. The model is actually "Essen" according to the label and the Atlantis name refers to the quality. Chose this one over a few other velours/longhair finished hats (among them a Lembert) because I liked the shape and the condition of this one best. It is an early one by the looks of it, but no clue as to who the maker was.

Another addition to the flock. More traditional this time. P&C Habig Special Qualität in black. Bound brim at 5,5cm and crown at 10,5cm. Bought this one because I liked the soft felt very much and the crown shape is very nice. When I brushed and steamed it this shape more or less formed by itself. I like it; something different. Habig hats are supposed to have the date on the label, but I can't find it on this one. The only number that could be something of a date is the number 66. Could very well be 1966.

Hi all,

Just received this beauty. A "John Batterson Fifth Ave". I happened to snatch it up when it first popped up as a BIN on the 'bay on Monday. It's a peach! Had a light center dent but no side creases so I just popped a quick bash on it and took these pics. Overall it looks like it might have only been worn a few times. No box unfortunately, but I assume it would have come with the Minneapolis store's box where it originally was sold.

It's a light to medium gray (it photographed it bit lighter than it is in person), 2.5" brim, 2" ribbon, wind trolley, and with a straight-sided 5.5" or so open crown. Overall I find it very, very similar in dimensions and quality to the Resistol in my profile pic.

The only other John Batterson I've seen mentioned here is Moehawk's green one – any info about the company? Were they tied into Stetson or did they just steal his name? Guessing it was a made early to mid '50s for department store sales across the country? Just curious.

Enjoy!

– Mike

New to me long-hair Cavanaugh homburg (not sure of the model).

It’s WAY more green than it looked in the eBay pics which looked much more olive/brown. Thoughts? I’m hoping I’m not giving off too much of a leprechaun vibe.

Also, any help dating this hat would be appreciated.

Also, the hat is a little musty as it probably sat in a box for decades. I was thinking of using baking soda to get the smell out, but I’m not sure if it can be used on a long-hair hat. Any help on that too would be appreciated.

Looks fine, though it likely won't go with everything. Wear it with confidence.

Yeah, baking soda should help. Letting it sit outside on a clear, breezy day works wonders, too.

Unless you live next door to the Limburger cheese factory.

Looks great, unless it’s a size 7 5/8 in which case it looks terrible and I’ll do you a favor and take it off your hands. :)

Super interesting. The term long hair is right for this one. I wonder if it is of the era of the Huggy Bear that went to Matt? The lack of Cavanagh on the sweat and just in the liner is similar. Huggy is definitely 1970s. Really a cool hat.

I just googled it. I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the model!
