Lots of great hats everybody. Looks like a good week for Derbies! I just got this vintage Stetson Derby in the mail, I didn't realize how much TLC this one was going to require, plus it's 7 1/4 not 7 3/4.but I'm going to keep it anyway. :)

Purplesage, that old Stetson hommie is nuts...Wow.
I finally got to removing the ribbon to put a new one on this old Portis but to my surprise, the original and very fresh, black ribbon is perfectly preserved. I'd say it's 2" or just under.
Too bad I didn't get to wear the hat this summer. There's always next year. We we are starting to get a taste of fall around here.

I can't believe I found this in a shop. It seems really old but is in great shape except for two tiny little bare spots in an OK spot on the brim's edge. It strikes me as a German long hair, made of hare I guess.

Ok my pics are working!
This is the blue gray Royal Stetson w/no liner. Possibly pre '50s to me. G976244 is on the orange tag and stamped on the sweat inside.

I like the ribbon. A bit fancier than a Playboy.

Unfortunately doesn't fit the old pumpkin. I guess it's about a 7 to 7 1/8 (says 6 on a little sticker but I'm not sure if that means the size).

Ok not new by far but I just showed it so here's the original and well preserved black ribbon. Next year it will be brought out into the sun to roar again. (Like the '20s did—OK, maybe not that much.)

Finally had a little luck at some local places with some hats. I picked up a charcoal gray Cavanagh--no other distinction, just a Cavanagh. It's in need of a cleaning, but it's otherwise in good shape; the sweatband is a little dry, but it's not bad. With the liner design and the information label, I'd guess this hat comes in right at 1959, before Hat Corporation pulled the block depths from the label.

I can't figure out what this says--any guesses? The store imprint is for L. Strauss & Co Inc, Indianapolis.

The second hat is a Knox Superfine. It's a lovely hat, but on top of the need for a really solid cleaning, this one's pretty moth-bitten; in fact, some of the bites go all the way through the felt. It's a nice light brown color, though, and it's got a nice bound edge. It might never be a big seller, but it's a handsome hat, and I got it for a song, so I don't mind the cost of a clean, block, and flange just to keep this guy in my collection.

Dating's a little interesting on this one. I always rely on Brad Bower's fantastic website for information for Hat Corporation hats, and so the inside label would seem to indicate a 40s hat, but the size tag would say 50s. There is a price sticker that says 12.50, but otherwise there are no other labels in the hat.
