Old hat lore. Supposedly a hat on the bed is bad luck, but I don't know why.

I've been told that since I was a kid. My grandfather who was a WWI vet and always wore a hat saw me lay a hat on the bed once and I think that was the only time I ever saw him upset. I've never laid a hat on a bed since then.

Che, that is one statuesque hat! Very nice indeed.

Seabass, you have bold tastes, but from prior pictures, I know you can pull off the look.

Congratulations to the both of you.

Recherche - early 20th C. dress western

My hats from the Cheyenne, WY auctions took two weeks to arrive by Pony Express. All three are interesting, this one is the best.

6" crown, 2 1/2" brim with brown silk forming an 1/8" edge trim and completely lining the underside of the brim. This is a dress hat befitting its name - very light and supple felt of high quality. Silk 7/8" ribbon and exotic bow with twisted tassel for added pomp. 2 1/4" sweat is thin but remains flexible. 3.4 ounces. A little soiled and a little moth nipped, but all in all, condition is excellent and the hat still wearable with care. More pictures to follow.

Great to finally see it! Recherche - adjective meaning exquisite; lavishly elegant and refined. I couldn't agree more.

Thanks Bill. I was misled by my high school French when I first saw it... had to look it up.

BR, congratulations on the new arrivals. They look great.

+1. I'm glad you got this wonderful early Fedora. Looking forward to more pics, and the other two hats. Did you get the lighter brown one with medium-wide matching ribbon and binding?

Looks great. I just took another one over to Mike to have converted to another Dualist or Pandora, whatever you want to call it. This time it will be with a Pecan brown brim. No rush to get it as fall is almost here. But I'll have it for next spring.

I admired that hat and a couple of others from this collection, but only bid on the ones that were my size. I will post more photos soon.

Alan, very interesting underside, I have never seen this!

It's quite an interesting wrapping technique. I remember seeing it in the old Stetson Premier Quality formal hat that Iyor purchased a year or so back. It is matched to the shape of the under brim very well and the silk is so durable - the fabric is like new. The silk ribbon and tassel also. My wife explained to me that silk's durability is related to its incredibly long fibre. Although it has similar lustre and drapes and dyes beautifully, the short fibers in rayon are not nearly as durable. The rayon ribbon in the other hat I worked on has not endured the century in storage as well as this one.
