About 30 years ago I found an unblocked vintage fur felt hat form. What I really liked about it was the feel - thick, silky soft and slightly furry. I'd always intended to see if it could be made into a hat, but somehow never got around to it. When I rediscovered it in a trunk I was unpacking, I sent it Art with a description of what I had in mind. I wanted a porkpie-type crown with a slightly wider brim, something unlike most other hats, something not really dateable and perhaps a bit flamboyant. I also asked him to try to retain as much of the feel of the felt as possible. Our resident hat master came up with exactly what I had in mind - even kept it kind of soft and floppy, and the pale lavender band puts it definitely in the realm of the eccentric. I know it's not a hat for everyone, but it suits my style and I love it.

Are you sure Art didn't originally bash that as a fedora, and it didn't slip into a porkpie while in transit?

Originally, I wasn't very fond of long-haired hats either, but they just seem "right" when the weather falls below freezing, and you're wearing a big overcoat, scarf, and gloves.

It's almost as if the added texture of the long hair gives the hat more "oomph" and helps it compete with the scale of the woolen coat and scarf, the gloves, etc. Balance might be the right word.

That makes sense. If I ever live anywhere that gets really cold in the winter, I may have to consider that.

My black Stetson Royal DeLuxe homburg came in yesterday. After a light steam and brush, it is perfect! (More on the Homburg Nation thread for those interested.)

Lee Centre Dent

Just received a box of four hats. All stacked up and crushed together.
That's okay- it's what I expected. I've been reviving them one by one.

Here's a Lee "Centre Dent". Previous owner had put in a crude C-crown,
which for some reason I thought was not correct. I wet it down and
put in a, well, a center dent:

The felt is a bit stiff but okay. Dense. An interesting green/brown color.
Note the "half" bow, too. 2 1/4" brim. I had been thinking of selling it
because it's a touch stingy for me, but I have come to like it.

Oh, original eBay listing:

Must be from the early 1960's, would work best with a crew cut. Note professional printing:rolleyes: ...obviously the same person's handwriting. Also Calif. rather than CA. or Cal. but PA. rather than Penn. State two letter codes date to 1963(foolish speculation?)

Finely woven Asian Straw. 2-3/8" bound brim. 5-1/2" crown was a somewhat smashed Diamond Crease. They left the sweatband out of the box[huh]

I'm bummed a bit. The nice Champ I bought from reetpleat went to Optimo for cleaning and blocking. They have told me the ribbon may have to be replaced and the sweat surely will since it will not stretch enough with the original to get back to a size 7.

Interesting weave! What kind of straw is it? Very well crafted!
