J.C. Penney Co - Marathon Hats
Midnight Blue-Black/Grey Heather
4 5/8 crown as a shaped (Approx 6 open)
1 3/4 grosgrain ribbon
2 1/8 brim with raw edge
Here is the first of two J.C. Penney Co Marathon Hats. I wasn’t too sure what to expect from the seller photos on this one. Wasn’t sure if it was black and very dusty or a heather felt. Turns out it is a beautiful deep dark midnight blue/black heather. Very hard to get a true representation of the color in photos. Maybe the under brim inside hat shot might be closest to true color. The felt is super soft and will shape any way you want even in the brim which really seems to prefer this little curl but looks great down as well. I do not know the age of this hat. I would say it is at least as old as 1940s.. but it does have a bit more of 1930s styling with its shorter brim and big boxy crown.

Cool find, David. Can we see more of the inside and out?View attachment 452983
1961 Rogers Peet hat. Had to buy this one — not only perfectly my style but my dad shopped at Rogers Peet for decades so it has a nice resonance.
Enjoy the weekend and felt hat weather!

J.C. Penney Co - Marathon Hats
Seafoam green/grey unlined felt
Approx 4 inch crown as shaped
Maroon/Navy pug style band
2 1/2 brim with triple stitched overwelt
The travel partner of yesterday’s Marathon.. another Marathon but quite a bit different in styling. Stepping into a bit more of 1940s styling with its wider brim and less substantial crown. A beautiful seafoam green/grey unlined felt and features a very cool duo-tone maroon and navy pug style hat band. And it still has its basting stitches tacking the band in place.. which is very neat. The 2 1/2 brim is finished in what may have been Marathon’s take on Stetson’s wafer edge. A triple stitched dual layer overwelt. It appears as if the welt was sewn and then trimmed as if you look directly at the edge you can see the two layers. If I decide I need to, I may see if I can eek out a bit more height in the crown but for now I will keep as is.

Thanks Bob.. and as always thank you for keeping me in mind when you saw them.Dig it! That was a nice pair of Marathons Joe!
It is crazy how much the proportions can change like that. If I can squeeze out another half inch out of the crown without too much taper it would about have whippet proportions. Crown is probably shorter than I prefer but it makes for something different. As if this hat needs proportions to be differentI’d have guessed that the brim was 3 1/8” wide if it was my size. It’s always shocking to see how much more proportions play in the look over the raw numbers.
