Hi folks.

My Akubra Fed iv arrived yesterday! Four weeks for delivery to UK, which isn't bad considering it came by boat due to flight cancellations.

Man the felt is stiff! Gave it some steam and it turned to putty, though, making it extremely easy to bash, even for a novice like me.

I expected the brim to be flatter after reading comments on here but was pleasantly surprised by how much flange there is.

No detailed pics as I'm sure you all know what a Fed IV looks like and the selfie camera on my phone doesn't work, so none of me in it, but here's the bash I fashioned. Centre dent or narrow teardrop I guess you'd call it... View attachment 272042 View attachment 272043 View attachment 272044

You did a good job shaping it. I like the organic look too.

Seconded, but then I really prefer the imperfect look of a hand-creased hat! I wish I could get that kind of depth in the top of the crown, but my head won't go along with that plan. Anyway, great look Bagelstreet!

Thank you! Yes - I hadn't considered that the tall crown would give more options when it comes to creasing so that was an unexpected benefit!

This hat was made for the Midwest Governors Conference held in Wichita in 1969. This hat was made for West Virginia Governor Arch A. Moore, JR. it came complete with the original box. The hat appears to be unworn and there is not obvious damage. The sweatband is as supple as one can hope for from sweatbands of this era. The open crown is approximately 5 1/2 inches and the bound brim is 2 3/8 inches.

The crown is very soft and has few stiffeners...definitely a dress weight Royal De Luxe type felt rather than say a 3X. The brim is much firmer. I’m not sure what Stevens called the color, but it’s much lighter than any silverbelly I’ve seen. It also has a slight blue tint. I’ll work on steaming and brushing it over the next few days.

The hat was made for a very colorful character:

And it’s the most generous fitting 7 3/4 I’ve ever had on my head.

I recently bought this hat from Art Fawcett. I didn’t get the backstory, but I’d guess someone wanted a wide ribbon conversion and something happened? In any case, I ended up with a nice size 62cm Akubra Campdraft in bluegrass green with a cool wide ribbon treatment.

I like it, I like it alot! But I do prefer larger ribbons, I think it looks really good. A nice brown colour would work well also, I've got a BGCD coming. May do something similar myself.

Edit: Just went through my ribbon box and wonder how this colour would look on the Bluegrass....interesting

Funny how just commenting on deadlyhandsome's new BG Campdraft and mine turns up only minutes later...Happy days, as I love the colour, no idea why I was scared of it for so long..... Now to getting onto that larger ribbon.....

Double Edit: Thoughts folks, BGCD with Brown Ribbon? Maybe I should start a poll j/k.

I’d bet that they are all grail hats to some of us (me). Sometimes the hunt and the collecting are an end unto themselves.

How did the naphtha/naptha bath turn out?
I ended up sending it to Optimo for restoration. The sweatband was toast, and Graham assured me he would have the felt looking like new.
I sent it today from Texas.
