OMG, Fred... NEVER, EVER put on a Straw before Straw Hat Day, (May 15th) or worse yet, never wear one AFTER Felt Hat Day, (Sept 15th) or else this happens! Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it!!

Can you imagine such a thing happening today? Men can run around shirtless without raising an eyebrow. We’ve lost as much as we gained with the relaxing of social norms.

Surprise! My Stetson Reward Shantung Fedora arrived today, sooner than I'd expected. Eagerly, I took it out of the box and put it on my head and ...it was too large.

Well, not exactly. I'm a long oval, and it fits front-to-rear, but is a bit wide on the sides. Good thing I'd ordered hat reducers, which also arrived today.

So I went about taking some photos, and it was then I saw the size label: Large.

Ernest DelMonico told me I should avoid general sizes and stick to the "true" sizes, which can be blocked long oval. Silly me. I may forgive myself, because I think I ordered the hat BEFORE my conversation with Ernest. So much for my experiment. I'll have to find another hat at DelMonico that I can have blocked.

I like the style and proportions anyway. I also feel your pain being a long (or extra long) oval.

Personally, I don’t wear my cloth sweatband summer hats much as they keep perspiration against my skin. I’d rather wipe a leather sweatband when needed than have a cloth band that absorbs and holds it. Just a preference/observation. Then again, my SunBody palm hat has a cloth sweat and I wear that a bit when working outdoors so I just contradicted myself. :)

Sunbody puts a thin layer of foam padding beneath the cotton cloth they use for their sweatbands, and that padding helps to absorb perspiration. Maybe that's the difference?

I was visiting my son in Chicago last weekend and could not resist stopping by my favorite hat shop.
(It’s a bad addiction). Anyway, I was able to fulfill an esoteric, but necessary need for some formal occasions, a Top Hat.

Picked this one up last week. It was listed as a bowler (and used as such), but it didn't look like a bowler to me. Tirard Fréres Supra homburg in black. Size 57 with a brim at 6cm and the crown 10,5 cm at the pinch. It's an earlier one, because it still has the name Tirard Fréres in the liner and sweatband. I have another Tirard which just has Tirard as the brand name. I cannot find anything useful on the brand online however, so I can't tell when the change happened.
