Surprise! My Stetson Reward Shantung Fedora arrived today, sooner than I'd expected. Eagerly, I took it out of the box and put it on my head and ...it was too large.

Well, not exactly. I'm a long oval, and it fits front-to-rear, but is a bit wide on the sides. Good thing I'd ordered hat reducers, which also arrived today.

So I went about taking some photos, and it was then I saw the size label: Large.

Ernest DelMonico told me I should avoid general sizes and stick to the "true" sizes, which can be blocked long oval. Silly me. I may forgive myself, because I think I ordered the hat BEFORE my conversation with Ernest. So much for my experiment. I'll have to find another hat at DelMonico that I can have blocked.

Sweat in it Fred. A couple of hot days should help. The cloth sweatband might suck up a bit.

Oh, have no fear, Mike. I sweat a lot when the weather gets warm. I'm a runner, so my body knows how to cool itself. But you make a good point. about the sweatband absorbing it, thanks. Still, I'm glad I bought spacers.

The last hat I have on order is a proper size that I've asked to have blocked long oval. We'll see how that works out.

Incidentally, is there a rule about when one can start wearing summer hats? Kind of like Miss Manners' observation that men don't wear white slacks before Memorial Day? Of course, if the weather is warm enough, I'll wear it any day!

May 15 is Straw Hat Day. September 15 is Felt Hat Day.

OMG, Fred... NEVER, EVER put on a Straw before Straw Hat Day, (May 15th) or worse yet, never wear one AFTER Felt Hat Day, (Sept 15th) or else this happens! Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it!!

Picked this one up recently as a 58 size. It wasn't: it turned out to be a 57 and a small one at that. Nice enough hat though. Overbeck Sonett in black, size 57, with a 6,5cm bound and triple stitched brim and crown at 10cm. Lovely felt with some spring to it (like nutria has). The hat reminds me of a Mayser I have with a similar finish and one that Steve posted recently. Can't say who te maker of this one was; may very well have been Mayser.

At first I thought you and Mike were kidding, but now I see you are not! Well, I have been properly advised and educated, and I will put away this shantung and the soon-to-arrive Dobbs until the aforementioned date.

I am leaving for a nine-day vacation to Costa Rica on the 4th of May. I guess I won't wear my straws, after all. However, if I perchance to find a quality one while there... :p

Pffft, rules. They were meant to be broken. And hat rules are the worst because they're so arbitrary. "Wear 'em here; don't wear 'em there; take 'em off in an elevator during months with a "R" in them; dance on 'em when you're in Mexico." Unless you're in the military and have to take orders from anyone who has more stripes on their sleeves than you, wear your hats whenever and however you want to. If someone has a problem with it, it's their problem, not yours.

I think you're given a pass in tropical climates.

Not that it is carved in stone like the past, but May 15th is Straw Day. I usually can't wait that long, and break the rule.
