I have to say that I love making felt hats. I've also, with the addition of a straw braid sewing machine and much practice and frustration, added Milan straw hats to the lineup. There comes a time, though, when all that gets a little tedious and you just want to make a hat for the pure hell of it. Enter the Victorian style smoking cap. Easy and fun to make and bordering on the nonsensical. No gentleman (or lady) that smokes in drafty old houses should ever be without one.

Throw some Bermuda shorts into that mix if you really want to scare them. The red velvet smoking jacket and flip flops complete the image...
Gorgeous green! It is interesting that "the New Slant" shows up with some variations. This one is a beaut. The lines are similar to my version, but details such as brim binding vs. stitching and the band treatments differ.Portis, The "New Slant" Lite-Wate / Tissue Weight Swans Down Finish in dark green.
Besides some tarnish on the liner tip, the hat appears to be near mint.
2.5" Brim
3/8" bound edge
4 1/2 crown as creased
1.5" ribbon

Yes, of the 3 or 4 Portis's (Portii?) on the lounge featuring this Lining, none of them are the same.Gorgeous green! It is interesting that "the New Slant" shows up with some variations. That's a real beauty! I believe that tip logo is early to mid 1950's.New (to me) Resistol came today!
Medium gray with a 2-1/4" brim. Kitten Finish Beaver Fifteen in 7 -3/8. Even included the original sales receipt ($15.00) and box. Would this be late '50s?
Now to have John at the Brass Rooster clean it up, maybe put a diamond bash crown on her, and re-shape it to a LO for me...

The receipt would be pre-1963 when Zip Codes came into use.I believe that tip logo is early to mid 1950's.
That beauty begs for a reblock to open crown. Why not have John do all you were planning to do but then give it your personal touch? The hat will love you all the more for it.New (to me) Resistol came today!
