It arrived and I feel much better about the $5 investment!

So ... what do I have here? It is flexible and almost cloth like (although it does want to curl back up and return to its "shell"). Parabuntal? Something else?

The store on the bamboo container closed around 1945 (it evolved into Tesoro's which is still around).

Little small as currently blocked. Can this be reblocked from a 6-1/2 to a 7-1/2 (with the miles of brim) or is it destined for a smaller headed owner?

That is a seriously fine weave Bob. Could turn into one sweet hat.

Michael

It would seem one of our more seasoned hatters can make something out of this for you, Bob. It will be interesting following the progress on this one.

Thanks Fruno. A boy can dream...

That would be very cool. Who are you going to have block it?

No idea as of yet. Need to gather funds to make that happen first.

I have to say that I love making felt hats. I've also, with the addition of a straw braid sewing machine and much practice and frustration, added Milan straw hats to the lineup. There comes a time, though, when all that gets a little tedious and you just want to make a hat for the pure hell of it. Enter the Victorian style smoking cap. Easy and fun to make and bordering on the nonsensical. No gentleman (or lady) that smokes in drafty old houses should ever be without one.

I have to go outside to smoke. I wonder what the neighbors who drive by would say. Or if they would even notice...

I took a gamble on a modern Milan Stratoliner. Pretty good quality, a little big, as my noggin runs between 7-3/8 and 7-1/2, so this is expected. But I really like the hat. This is the sand color and I like that a lot, too. I got this from ebay, but through fellow FL'r Mike @Monavillecowboy . This was the best price I've seen, so if you guys are thinking about one of these you might give Mike a look-see. Hot as Haiti outside, on the way to 107F degrees here, again. I might just take this to my niece's wedding.

First shot is for Bob / @Bob Roberts , who likes the brim up sometimes. :)
