nice looking stiff felt. If it is indeed manufactured in Chicago, nice Derby!
At the very least, they sold it. It is their brand but they were also retail. They were around since at least the mid 19th century and were known as the "Chicago Hatters". Not sure if they jobbed the hats out or made them themselves. Wish I could date it better....but with the quality and price ($5) it can really be NO later than the early 40's. I am very happy finding this....,I will occasionally wear this for special dress events.
Cheers,
M

It looks like I forgot to post my new hat from John Penman here. I ordered this back in July/August thinking I might have it by the end of December. My first order for a custom hat. Well, John Penman came through a few weeks early for me.

Steel beaver felt, 5-3/4" crown, and dimensional cut brim at 2-3/8" on the sides and 2-1/2" front and back. A silver-grey ribbon and bow, with a navy highlight behind the bow, and a knot with navy, silver-grey, and a lighter silvery-grey coming to a "V" highlight in the middle of the knot.

Very soft felt to the touch, fits perfectly and screams ATTITUDE with a certain class to it. I love the blued steel color and the deep side dents with center crease. I've messed around with a diamond crease, but the center dent looks better to my eye.

I have loved every picture you have posted of this beauty. Envy, jealous and probably breaking the covet one as well...
