I saw this Champ on the Bay with a BIN of $15, 6 to ship. Liked the color, band was cheesy, but that's why I have ribbon and dye.

It arrived yesterday, while I was out mailing away that Marathon. Talk about a huge difference in color! The band was indeed cheesy, and I happened to have a piece of ribbon dyed for another project that wasn't the right color, so I replaced it.

The crown is 5 1/4" open, the brim 2" with a nice overwelt. I understand now why their slogan was "Feel the Felt". I have, and it is worthy.

I decided about 30 seconds after opening the box that I liked the actual color better than the reddish brown of the ebay pic. The ribbon, while a reject for the other hat, was perfect for this one.
My guess on age is late 50's early 60's, but a guess only. Hopefully it's not the last cheap Champ on the bay!

Thanks guys! It's a keeper for sure.
I think that woven band was aftermarket, btw, as it was sewn on through the liner with even sloppier stitches than mine. The ribbon I put on was Turftan ( similar in color to seller's pic of the hat) overdyed with Olive Drab. Totally wrong for the brown Biltmore I dyed it for, but perfect for this one.

My first custom hat (but not last) from Rand's Custom Hats in Billings, MT. It is a 20X beaver, western fedora in smoke, with a 3 1/4 inch brim and 5 3/4 inch crown. Wow, what a difference getting my head measured with a conformature makes, it fits perfectly. I never realized how good a hat could fit until I put this baby on my noggin. (Of course, being an extra extra long oval might have something to do about it)
I'll definitely be ordering more from Rich Rand. If you are ever in Billings Mt, I recommend you stop by Rich Rand's place, he is one heck of a hat maker and an all around nice guy.
