Yes, I too am swooning over Steve's purchase. Every day is another stunner.
Josh, I'm going to check my modern production Tonak Colombo when I get home. Not certain the year, but probably '90s or'00s.
Chamuco - you're making my wait for my CD unbearable!!

Very cool. That would really be an incredible trip to go see Tonak and all the wonderful equipment they have. I would be willing to bet that European hat companies...not all...but some, used this "European" sweatband method for quite some time after the war. I know Tonak was using it as far as 2006, but if I bought a 2015 Tonak, I would be willing to bet they still use this method to this day. Its a much more secure way of attaching sweatbands to felt bodies in my opinion. It doesn't leave room for the sweatband to "self-conform" as the "American" method does. I wonder if the European hat companies had specific reasons for using this method. [huh]

The last time I visited I didn't ask enough questions and didn't look close enough. They also have no interest in the past and are too protective of the current. :)

I am sure I have examples of both methods. I believe some of my reed sweatbands are actually hand stitched so holding on by a few threads. I will definitely take a look closer look.

Janyška, size 55cm, 1930s. This one is beyond description so I will let the photos do the talking.

I believe Čistá Plstěný means Pure Fur Felt.

Mayser, that Janyska is absolutely stupendous! I itch just looking at it! How is that hat not lined?

p.s. You don't happen to have one of those in a size 60 by any chance? Cause I'm in!

No unfortunately this is the only one. If you look at the ribbon its makeup is similar to the felt. It just shows how great hats were at one time.

The felt is actually very soft I don't think it would cause any itching. Here is a close up of the felt.

The multicolored fibres in the felt make me wonder if this was a way to use up the wide variety of colored felt fibers on the shop floor at the end of the day. Each batch producing a different color? Just fantastic!!

This just arrived a little while ago. One of the cheap Stratton's noted in another thread.

As delivered:

Box opened. Note the included chin straps not noted in the listing.

The first green hat I own. The badge grommet on the front will keep it from being a hat to wear to the office, but it should be a good 'work' hat.

Was surprised to see the 'Wide Oval' tag, since that wasn't shown in the listing either. Hoping some steam will help improve the fit.

By the way, the brim is stiff as a board, though expected since I read about it elsewhere. Hoping some steam, wear and general abuse will help soften it up.

Ah! Excellent, thanks so much for posting this! It is the same technique. They are using a larger stitch, but its the same technique.

I checked a 1930s JHS Stiff Felt that has some popped stitches and it's similar although more delicate (hand stitched?). If you look close you can see the stitches in the gap. The two threads popping out are cut.

Also I am not sure the TONAK I posted is from the JHS factory. It might have been made by Janyška & Cie. The old box I received has TONAK but the address is for Janyška & Cie. (Janyška is also stamped on the box).
