Picked this up in Asheville over the weekend.



I thought this to be toquilla straw, though I could be wrong. I count about 30 wpi. Am I doing this right?

Outstanding find... looks to be very fine and well woven. From the backlit photo, it seems to have the central boxed weave pattern that I associate with a parabuntal.

My problem is that I wasn't malnourished as a child & my head is TOO *^%# BIG! This is, too, a 7 1/8 at best ... but I couldn't let it just sit there... ya' know, eh? [huh]

Is there NO way to stretch the body &/or alter the point at which the brim breaks, thereby yielding a larger crown w/ a shorter brim, given the obvious antiquity & high quality?
...didn't think so, :eusa_doh: nuts!

On the other hand I got this for a pittance & it is quickly becoming a daily beater!
As plain as the side of an old barn, nothing fancy, nothing pretentious, a workin' mans' hat.
A good thirty dolla' hat, IMO.

Just arrived, fresh from the Beaver Brand auction, via eBay...

Since it was in my size -- a size 8! -- and since I didn't have a hat in navy color yet....

Seller asked $50. Got it for $37.50.

I bought this Collins & Fairbanks through eBay from another 'Lounger, Purplesage. He originally got it from miamibruno. Thanks for keeping it in great condition guys!! Steamed, brushed, and creased. Will post more pics in other threads...
