I am fighting the urge for a second bowl of cereal as I type this on Sat. Morning.......:eusa_doh:

lol

I can relate all too well. For Christmas, I got two pairs of pants. When I was asked, I said I need a 34 waist. What I got was 36's. They actually fit better  :rage: , BUT I took them back and exchanged them for 34's. I refuse to give in so easily. They are killing me  , so they're constantly reminding me not to eat too much...and exercise more! My guess is, I'll be able to breathe with them on within a month or so. ;) :eusa_doh:

pgoat, After carefully analyzing your facial structure and confidence factor, I am happy to report that the hat which is most perfectly suited to you (and vice versa) is a LIGHT GREEN FEZ WITH AN ORANGE TASSEL! I would therefore recommend the following course of action:

1. Send hats 1, 2, and 3 to our friend bolthead who, if I know him at all, will not charge you a "disposal fee" and may even reimburse you for part of the postage.
2. Sell number 4 (That's the one made out of straw.) on e-bay, for whatever it will bring. Then use the proceeds from this sale to...
3....ship the remainder of the hats to the soon to be opened "Fedora Lounge Museum," which will be located in a small town in East Texas. :D :D :D :D

BUT IN ALL SERIOUSNESS, You have a wonderful collection. Keep, wear, and enjoy every one of them. LOOKING GOOD!!!

If any consolation, I've found cotton pants will loosen up if you wear 'em enough times but it's usually well time for the laundry by then (I usually wear jeans twice before the wash, but If I am trying to squeeze into the next size down, I'll wear 'em around the house for a few hours at a time first......when you start to lose conciousness, it's time to peel them offlol ).

Of course, avoid the high heat dryer setting - I have tried dry cleaning my Levis to avoid shrinkage and also to keep the rigid dark blue look (I am probably one of the few who prefer rigid stiff new cardboardy Levis to soft faded ones - unless we are talking a REALLY old pair you've lived in and broken in yourself, from an original rigid state).

Thanks JT.
You know, I actually had a couple of tassel fez caps many moons ago - wore 'em onstage with my band as a sort of joke.....I have no idea what ever happened to them....I don't recall them being too flattering!

just fyi, if anyone is a 7 3/8 Long Oval - I am relisting #1, The Knox Black Stingy. Since the overwhelming votes here were for brims of 2 3/8" and up for me, I may thin out the stingies and just keep one for casual wear.

The black one goes first since it's kinda small on me anyway (I'm really a 7 1/2).

The newer hats I am getting will all have 2 3/8" to 2 3/4" brims. I don't think they'll go as well with tee shirts as a stingy, but I probably will wear a baseball cap if I'm out jogging or whatnot anyway (sorry, awful, I know!)

Hiya folks,

I missed this thread somehow. Just now getting around to looking at it.

Anyway, I vote for #4 (the Panama) and #5 (the Art Fawcett/Vintage Silhouettes). No contest, man.

There are good things, too, going on with #6 (the Knox, because the color works well) and the #7 (the Borsalino, which has the "right" ribbon-to-crown ratio).

Judging from the eight hats you've accumulated so far, here's my general take on what works and what doesn't.

Wide brims versus stingy brims? In this contest, the wide brims take it by TKO in half a round.

Make sure your hats fit. Hats #3, 6, and 8, especially, ride way too low on your head. You got eyes under them things, or what? :)

As for colors, it's the really light and really dark hats that look best, out of these eight. Stock up on silverbelly, slate, black, navy, and suchlike colors of felt.

The brown hats you've got (#3 and 8) are especially dodgy, as neither quite picks up both the olive & ruddy sides of your complexion. Instead, the more red-brown hat makes you look green and the more olive-brown hat makes you look sunburned. If you want brown, you'd have a lot easier time of it if you'd stick with straw/beige light or bittersweet chocolate dark, is my guess.

Finally, both the honkin' fat ribbons and the less extreme ones worked on one hat or another of this group. And failed on one or another. I'd say that the successful ones were the ones where the ribbon was less than half the total crown height. (I wonder how you'd fare with a really thin ribbon?)

Guess that's about it.

Cheers,
Mark

wow - that's quite an assessment!

Thanks for the detailed comments; I especially appreciate that about the skin tone and hat color. I think for me personally it's the hardest thing to evaluate on myself.

Knox #3 and #6 were ebay finds and both labeled as 7 1/2 (my size - kinda, I also can sometimes do 7 3/8 - #1 & #7), so I was surprised they fit so loosely. (#2 is a 7 1/2 Knox and fits pretty perfectly) #6 is a LO and was particularly big. I have since put flet strips all around the sweatband and that has helped me avoid the Charlie Daniels effect somewhat.

I was in the proces of ordering an Akubra Campdraft and may try the thin ribbon. I was also gonna try the brown (Taupe Fawn)....now you have me thinking silverbelly might be better for me....

I realized I never added my Gus Miller here:

This one has a brim width similar to the Stefeno panama.

I'm thinking of putting my stingys up on ebay soon. They look ok to me when I check in the mirror, but looking at these photos, side by side with the wider brims (2 1/4" and up) I think your feedback is on the money...wider brims for my face. I've lost about 15 lbs since then (note the Gus Miller shots were taken in January!) but I still have a big fat head:D

I should also sell the Knox 15...too big on me. Unless I can shrink it safely?

Definitely #5 and #7 look the best for the shape of your face.

Thanks Craig!
We were watching Public Enemy on TCM last night and I drove my wife nuts as she kept looking from Cagney's stingies to my mug as I kept trying on and comparing my hats ("What about this one, honey?")

Thanks guys.

I wore the gray stingy Knox a few times in the last week or two and got lots of compliments - I think people can easily tell a vintage or high quality modern lid from the more generic fedoras typically found today.....

If I haven't exhausted your patience yet, please refer to the album located here and be as brutal as you like about what is good, bad or ugly.
