Panama Hat Thread

Can anyone suggest a good place to buy a cheap Panama hat from the Uk. I like the white bleached look and would like it to be foldable for travel.

I previously bought one from Tumia :
https://www.tumi.co.uk/collections/panama-hats/products/panama-hat

But after three years of light wear it has turned yellow and started to split. However still not bad for a hat under £50 and better then M&S, etc.

I am also looking at a cheap hat from panama hats direct:
https://panamahatsdirect.com/shop/panama-hat/cuenca-grade-1-classic-fedora-7166.html

The advantage with Panama hats direct is that I can choose some nice bands but almost half the cost is going on shipping.

I am also close to London, so I could check out all the gentleman hat fitters but I have a feeling they are going to be more expensive then online.

I could go up to £100 but as bleached hats seem to have a short life, I don't want to spend too much.

Anyone else have any other suggestions ?

Westward Ho! UK.
I think you've done your homework there Trevor.
Online is pretty much your only choice for cheap panamas in Blighty.
Bricks and mortar stores mainly retail Christys' or Olney panamas but Olney stopped making hats last year!
For myself, Ebay and others have kept me in everyday straw for a few years now and every now and then ...

Last summer I found a Borsalino montecristi for £100 on Ebay.

Christys' have a sale on atm.
Welcome.

White Panama hats have been bleached to look that way. Over time they will naturally discolour. So you may be looking at getting a new hat every few years to “freshen up your flow”
I do find it odd your last one started to crack, being your in the UK. Usually it’s from a lack of moisture. In Alberta Canada we have a very dry environment. So I usually have to put my Panama’s in the bathroom when I shower a few times to get moisture back in the weave before wearing. As long as I remember to do this I have never had an issue.
Only place I have bought from that’s still in business is PanamaHatsDirect. Been a positive experience for me so that’s who I could comfortably recommend.
Hope that helps

I lied. I have bought from TheVillageHatShop and this is their UK web page. They sell white Panama hats as well. I just can’t make comment on quality.

The retailer was Aqua Terra in Panama City, Florida, but I don’t know who made it. The brim is approximately 3 1/4” wide not counting the curl (4” total). The crown is 4 1/4” high at the front.

An old (perhaps very old) straw hat constructed of sewn plaits. Taller than a boater and supple/flexible... I don't have more information other than the photos. No store or manufacturer marks other than the heraldry imprinted on the liner. Italian make, perhaps? The size conforms to U.S. measurement for 6 7/8.
