Panama Hat Thread

Although not the finest weave, and costing more than I ever thought I’d spend on a Panama hat, I recently bought this Brent Black. It was listed as new and a size 7 3/4 so I was sure I had found my summer dress hat. The hat arrived and was everything I was expecting except it’s a size 7 1/2! It’s going back and while my hat fund is happy I’m really bummed this didn’t work out. Seller’s photos:

A bummer indeed, Brent. Had your name on it, but sadly not your size.

That is so annoying, the same thing happened to me about six weeks or so ago. I bought a sports jacket, a real gem, size 44." It would be hard pushed to say that it was a 40." It puts me off when traders get fanciful with dimensions.

Unfortunate about the size. Brent's hats sure have some sharp lines

That's a pity, Brent. Looks like a nice even weave. Great shape to the hat as well. Would have been nice to own a Brent Black panama.

Hi, is been a while since i visited the Panama hat thread.

Have this Monticristi that's pretty awesome and I'd like to keep it. Don't like the shape though. Think i can steam and reshape the crown??

My personal experience with shaping Panama hats has not been great. You really need a block with the desired crown shape. You also need to be careful as steam can cook the “straw” fibers and damage them if they are heated too much or for too long.

It’s a nice hat with a nice weave…maybe send it out to a hatter who knows Panama hats to have it reshaped?

Yes, the risk is greater experimenting on your own. I sent a decent quality Panama to my custom hatter for reshaping and it cracked along the top edge by the pinch. So regardless there is risk even by a super experienced hand.
