Odd question: grainiest HH or Steerhide?

I've seen grain samples in pix all over the map. Personally, I love grain (character) in my leather. Ultra smooth just bores me. Do you guys know who has such hides, and what is the difference between smooth and grainy hides? Decided I needed to learn something new today :)

Now now, I'm not trying to insult you or anyone else! Just stating my preference, and wondering what makes for a grainy hide? Is it better? Worse? Doesn't matter? I just prefer it's look is all. :)

My steerhide jacket is developing quite a heavy grain fairly quickly, it started of smooth and has had two weeks wear.

The FQHH jacket I have has a much finer and more complicated grain.

Nice! Oe thing that has me looking at the FQHH now is the older ones I see (decades old) look very unique. I figure I have a few more years left in me and I can make my own cool jacket over time. I've got lots of wool and lamb and goat a jackets, but no steer or HH. OYE, it's hard to choose. And yes, I know I can't eat just one :)

Fletch and Aether the grain on your jackets is beautiful.
I keep hearing that horse hide has a better grain than steer but I don't see anyone posting pictures to demonstrate the fact.

The more grain the better I say! however my cow/steerhide jackets have definitely more grain than the horse I've got. That said, nothing beats goat!

For my motorcycle jackets, my first choice is always the thickest hide possible. Usually, that means "from a cow". Steerhide is very common. I've heard that buffalo is available in some places too. Police uniform duty jackets all appear as if they are steerhide. The steerhide seems to be thicker, heavier, and tougher. With exceptions of course, there are always exceptions. None of my local retailers have a Schott Perfecto in horsehide. But if anyone out there has one, please advise to the thickness of the hide. Would you feel comfortable taking a spill wearing it? But I do seem to prefer horsehide over goatskin in the A-2. This is based purely on my observation and opinion. But the goatskin looks and feels softer; and to me, that means will take less abuse. Although I do have a goatskin jacket that I've abused for about 25 years.
