Now, and in no way is this meant to be discourteous, but do you really have to besmirch such a kindness? Isn't there enough of that?
Besmirching such a kindness? Even if that were grammatically and physically possible, you are quite off topic, and miss my point. To do so, I would have had to demean Mr. Depp's act of charity, which I never did, nor would. I still stand by my inappropriate behavior comments, as the proper etiquette of the mom, would have been to tell her son to leave the kind gentleman alone. She exposed her true greed-based colors by Googling Depp's production company, and firing off an e-mail, BEGGING for him to "Keep his promise". Kids need to learn proper manners, and not be enabled by parents who do not teach them aforementioned manners. No discourteousness intended, Messieur Lucky, just my humble opinion.[/QUOTE]
Off topic? Not quite. You ARE demeaning the entire act by your need for qualification and utter presumption. First and foremost, how do you know what SHE did? Are you assuming that she Googled and found an email for his production company or is this a statement of fact? I found no such reference in the story. In fact, after searching IMDBPro, which I pay for, and finding only a link to his company's one page website, I still have no access to an email. Now, do you know the text of presumptive email? Was the tone that of 'begging?' If so, would you care to share the exact content? Obviously, you know NOTHING of these people, yet you are so quick to condemn! Yes, I know very little too, but at least I am refraining from going negative instantaneously and am willing to give the mother and son the benefit of the doubt, without qualification, in the hopes that it was simply an impulsive action by a child that resulted in a selfless act of kindness that brought joy to all concerned. Why does it have to be anything else?

Oh, and my grammar and usage of 'besmirch' was correct. But thanks for the concern.

Well, I think I've got to side with Woodsie on this one. Asking for an autograph is one thing, asking for a piece of personal property that has actual intrinsic value to the owner (in this case Mr. Depp) is something else. To reference Mr. Fawcett's example, this would be like asking Arnold Palmer for one of his golf clubs. A 12-year-old is old enough to know better. If he had been 6 years old, I would be ready to excuse it and see it as an opportunity for the young lad to learn something about proper manners. If he hasn't learned by age 12, the mother should rightly have been embarrassed and should have made certain the boy knew he had blundered. She should not have enabled him, as Woodsie said. Following up with Mr. Depp's "people" the way she did was extremely tacky, in my opinion. Sending the hat shows Mr. Depp has far more class than the boy's family. I'm also glad that the hat he sent, while apparently a nice vintage one, isn't believed to be the hat Depp was actually wearing. Sounds like a good compromise to me.

I don't remember the kid asking for the hat off his head.

I'm thinkin that that HAT is something special to Depp.

He was touched enough to go out and search out a vintage for the kid.

Who the F are you to criticise this gesture of human kindness?

I'd say more but I'd be banned for it.

From the linked news story: "When Taylor, who loves and collects hats, reached the front of the line, he looked up at Depp and said, "Hi, nice to meet you. I like your hat, can I have it?""

I don't think anyone is criticizing Mr. Depp.

I think far too much is being assumed about this story. Too bad because it is a real neat story when the actual documented chain of events are referenced. Perhaps this story has now been bloodied so much that there is little point in continuing. I for one am done with this thread and will leave it having a huge respect for Mr. Depp and a visual of that boy taking great care of that hat and perhaps joining our ranks someday.

Anyone remember this?

Sure, it was a commercial! But things like that happen in real-life ALL the time! Tell me folks here have never heard a kid ask a ballplayer for a baseball or, themselves, have asked their favorite musician for a guitar pick or t-shirt when lucky enough to come in contact!

And, for the love of mike, why should an excited 12 year old know better! He's TWELVE! Let him be 12! This is a nice story - there are no BAD guys! Why does there have to be?

I've been watching this thread for a while...and never thought it would take such an off the wall direction. Obviously the situation has really touched a nerve or two. I was brought up out there, and to this day, I still wouldn't ask for an autograph ( I see no real value)...I may say hello, but thats about it. I think to many expect something from actors...grand gestures from them. They're just like everyone else, though some grow to believe they are more. Most I have known were all really nice people...and I was punk kid at one time, which is when I knew them.
I'm with Art on this...leave 'em alone, live and let live...etc.

Hey Colby,
Will you give me your newly acquired vintage Whippet with the thin ribbon? Please autograph it with a medium point black Sharpie, and include a bushel of oranges from your wonderful Sunshine State, Priority Mail. If you don't my momma will be sure to e-mail you, and you don't wanna get my momma angry.
Best Wishes,
Woods:p

Wow - I have been busy all day and just now got back to this. Maybe Mom sent the email because there was no other way for this to happen - Depp said Yes, but the story does not say whether or not Depp wrote down the kid's address at that time, which would have slowed down the autograph line, so maybe it was simply essential for the Mom to make contact and provide the address and remind them of the promise.

I also wonder whether or not Depp really had the authority to give away the hat he was being filmed in - I think all clothing, props, etc would belong to the studio - assets to be auctioned off someday. If that is the case, then it was LARGE of Depp to go to the effort to send the kid a hat, maybe culled from his own stash?

He did so much to promote hats, (real NICE FEDORAS) the least we could do to grant him honorary FL membership.

Depp is obviously a fedora aficionado and I would be surprised if never stumbled across this site.
Imagine the look on his face after reading this thread..

How long has he been wearing 'em for? Is it a recent thing with him (Depp) or has he been into them a long time?

Also--What is the color of these two hats and ribbon:

I think Depp has been wearing hats since the 90s. I seem to remember seeing photos of him in fedoras around the time he made films like Gilbert Grape and Dead Man.
