Well... presumably the eel had crawled a couple of feet away by then (as you don't see Chekov anywhere near it when it disintegrates), but I see your point. It didn't particularly bother me. The one Meyer-ism that was really puzzling to me, however, was all the -- Wait, PURPLE?! Since when??? -- Klingon blood in ST6. And the fact that Starfleet phasers would even create puncture wounds like that to begin with.

In The Man Trap, Kirk expressed regret at having to kill the salt vampire at the end of the episode, if I recall correctly.

Well I think all that red blood wouldve been bad for their film rating. So they made it pretty alien blood. But I see your point.

The funniest thing about MANTRAP is...McCoy strips Kirk of a phaser? THENSpock cant pull the phser out of McCoy's hand???? He struggles w/ McCoy & then decides to punch the vampire to show McCoy its not really the old grrlfriend. Hysterical. And of course this is long before they came up w/ the idea of the vulcan neck pinch. And you've gotta love Shatner's screams. I dont think he screams like that again til Wrath of Khan.
In Wrath...his screams really struck me as a bit out of character...then i remembered Shatner did scream in TWiliteZone as well. Lots of passion in Wrath. Not the best editing, but still unsurpassed.

I do miss the ruthless federation soldiers from the Captain Kirk movie era.

... those guys were conspirators though.

I still think the other ship is needlessly revisionist. It still has those $%@& blue warp thingies, as if Enterprise is justification for them.

On a better note, the showing of The Menagerie tonight was wonderful.

I don't remember that scene with the space suited guys at all? Which film is it from? ST:TMP? Apparently time for a rewatch.

VI, The Undiscovered Country, which was to be the name of the second film, also directed and partially written by Nick Meyer, until the studio execs changed the name to The Wrath of Khan just to exercise their power. The reason he even chose that name was because The Vengeance of Khan was too similar to the then-announced Revenge of the Jedi (which ironically underwent a name change to the completely dissimilar Return of the Jedi).

fan film-er weighs in

a purist's comments:

James Cawley, creator of Star Trek New Voyages has seen the new Enterprise ship and is not impressed. "I have seen the new rebooted Enterprise. I have friends in the right places! At any rate, I don't like it. It is supposed to be NCC-1701, no bloody A,B,C,D or E! and it sure does not look like the 1701 I grew up with!" He went on to say, "I see Matt Jefferies designs as timeless and as pure science fiction. I feel the Big E as designed by Matt deserves its day on the big screen." Cawley feels that nothing was wrong with Trek and "Re-imagining or rebooting is changing what Star Trek is," he said. "I am not against the recasting at all. But Star Trek is not broken, it does not need to be fixed or reimagined or anthing of the sort." Having said that, Cawley is not against the recasting and he hopes that the film will be successful.

MrBern: From what I understand, it's a love-hate relationship between the two. Shatner is infamous for pissing off his castmates and stroking his ego. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why they didn't want him in.

And I completely agree with him. I certainly hope they listen to the fans.

Well in their appearances together in the last few months, there has been the ongoing comment that Nimoy's position is this is all Shatner's own fault for participating in th death of the Kirk Character. A movie that Nimoy boycotted.

As for the past relationships, I've heard the co-stars remark that they were quite surprised how nurturing Shatner was as the director of TrekV. Tho Doohan seemed to resent him more & more. Nobody loves a prima donna.

Anyway, it all made for a great roast on Comedy Central.

Bern: Yes, I read that in Takei's biography. But he wasn't convinced that was really Shatner from his past experience with him (convincing directors to centre shots on him, cut out other expository stuff with other characters, etc.). He was more convinced that it was him acting like the nurturing, caring director for his own ends. Interesting how karma made it turn out to be the bad apple of the TOS movies. lol

New Voyages' and CBS Digital's presentations of the original Enterprise are far better than the attempts by Abrams' teams so far, IMHO. While I don't care for some of the acting in New Voyages -- not to mention the special effects shots in "In Harm's Way" -- they, overall, get the spirit of original Trek down really well.
