I decided to reblock my optimo and give it a more square shape. What do you guys think? which one do you like more?

I am sorry, but the lines on the reblocking just look sloppy. The original is cleaner and seems more natural.

All constructive criticism.

The idea is excellent; the execution is off. I really like the idea of this boxy optimo crown, but the blocking came out so that the sides are all wavy and distorted. Would look best as l l, but came out as ( l. The result makes the crease (bash? straw hat crease?) appear... uncertain... like you wanted a to make an 'optimo-telescope' crown, but stopped halfway between the blocking so the sides of the crown started to droop.

P.S.--Have you thought of extending the center crease to the brim? So the line extends across the entire hat? It's a great look in my opinion. But it's your hat. ;) :p

P.P.S.--To Aureliano (and really OT)- It arrived! Haven't picked it up, yet, though. Thanks!

Cheers,

I like the original shape best. The square one is just too square.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate it. The original one just looked too round for me. The ridge was also too bland. I'm very fond of squares, come to think of it lol :p

That's why I posted this poll, for the constructive critisism of you and other loungers. I wonder if because of the photo the sides look droopy. They are quite straight, not wavy at all. I'm a bit OCD about this things...
Thanks for commenting, Flute. BTW what's OT?

PS.
Glad it made it home!

My preference is the second, more square, hat. I have never been able to appreciate the crease/line in the middle of the more round optimo's, but then, it took me many years before I developed an appreciation for spinach.

Thanks DRB! finally one more for the square team! :eusa_clap

I'd like to point out as well that the ridge on the after picture sticks out a little because the hat stand pushes it up. On the before shot I used a plastic insert to avoid this effect. I just can't seem to remember where I put the darn thing...

I think it's just a case of one extreme to the other. I, personally, would not like an optimo crown quite as round as yours was prior -- but I think the boxy re-block is just too severely angular.

When Graham in Chicago blocked my panama he struck what I consider a perfect balance, pictured below. Perhaps you can dampen and coax yours to be somewhere between what it was and what it currently is.

Beautiful, Gene. I'll try and post pictures. Though, to be honest, I'm liking the super angular shape.

No need to be sorry. Worth saying I used a block.

Looking at it with a full (debateable, but anyway) nights sleep, I am able to pinpoint more specifically what seems wrong. THe crease down the center seems crooked in the picture, and for my taste it is also just a little bit too prominent. That said, I do like the square shape.

Edit: Oops, you already answered to this.

Proof that the night's sleep was not full.

You're right, yeps. It was crooked but only noticed after I took the pic and put away the equipment. It looks prominent because the hat stand pushes it up. As I said on an earlier post, I'd used a plastic hat insert on the "before" shot. I'm still looking for it!

Remember too that what's important is how a given hat looks and feels on the actual wearer's head, not how it looks on a stand or as a centerfold. ;)
