New Fedora Advice needed

I have been reading through the threads and found a great amount of information, but still have some questions. I am seeking a Fedora that does not have the brim turned down, something along the line the character Christopher Foley wears on Foley's wars. I am a big guy 6'1 235 lbs with a bald head, so I don't want anything that will hide my face. My thought is that a straight brim will look better on me. I have been looking at the Akbura line in the open crown, so I can bash it as I would like. Does this brand, or any brand lend itself well to wearing a flat straight brim? IF you think something else would work better, please let me know. Thanks for your help.

There are some Akubra hats that would work well with a straighter brim, and with most of them having a raw edge, it's easier to flatten any remaining curl. You can also get a custom made hat with a flat brim; a member here named Alive 'n' Amplified got a custom made hat from Falcon Park Hattery that has a welted edge (where part of the felt is folded under or over and stitched tight) and a nice, flat brim. I've also seen a couple of VS hats that have this as well. Hope that helps.

Flatness of the brim depends on the flange used. Some flanges have more curl than others.
With raw edge brims, you can press out some of this curl.
Bound edges & welted edges have fabric & stitching that hold the curl or snap in & are less forgiving.
Some of us dig more swoop than others...

Something most people can do if you have a hat, the brim can be steamed with a kettle with distilled water in the kettle, steam it well, place the hat crown side up on a smooth flat surface, use the very end of a hat brush handle to "smooth" the brim flat while turning the hat in a circle. If you do that a few times to a hat brim and let it cool a bit between steaming and doing it again, the brim should stay flat. You can then also adjust the sides or back of the hat brim doing about the same thing, steaming and putting the exact shape you would desire it to have. The brim on most hats have "stiffener" in them and that will help hold the brim in a shape after steaming it, as the steam activates the stiffener until it cools down.
