i am thinking of getting this hat made, with the back a little lower then whats in the photo. I'm thinking of getting it made in either dark chocolate with a rust color hatband. Also more of a flip on the back of the brim. my question for you guys is, would you like this hat with a thin hat band, or like the one in the picture. I was watching THE RING OF FIRE, and the detective has a hat similar to this. I was also thinking of getting this hat made in a sahara felt color with binding. Now with the dark chocolate i'd have it with a raw edge. So i need advice, i'm taking the plunge for an ART creation, and would love the input. Also brim size and trim, or height of crown, i was thinking a tall crown like 5 maybe 5 in a half, brim size not sure yet.
Art i'd love to hear your imput as well, I have a lot of short brim fedoras like the one in my avatar, i'd like to have a larger brim. Need to know what you all think and seeing my face what would look nice. Like i said taking the plunge, color might not stay the same but design is definate on the way the crown and pinch is done.

I would try a 2 1/2 inch brim in a color you don't have, but which matches with the maximum possible number of clothes colors in your closet.

Well, Art can help a lot with brim and crown height advice. Send him pictures of yourself with and without a hat on.

As for the other details, it's all a matter of personal taste. I love wide ribbons and bound edges. What you should do it browse around the Art Fawcett Hall of Fame thread, and the What Hat are You Wearing Today thread. Take note of the ribbons and edges that appeal to you most often.

It's not an easy choice to make, but for a first, go with all the things you love most. I did. My first was gray, wide ribbon, bound edge, classic, untapered crown, and a wide brim. I have no regrets. :D

Honestly, the others are right. Art is gonna be your best reference in what looks good in a hat. He's the one that makes it, so if you've got a style in mind, he will probably be the most helpful in recreating a hat. Have you seen the Johnny Deep Silverbelly recreations he's done. This man can craft a hat!

Also, isn't that a pic of that hat on the Penman website?

i am going into the 1930's style of dressing, i have my hair cut like johnny depps in Public Enemies, so i do want a classic style to this hat.

here is the exact style with the first picture i posted with the top of the crown. I have a drawing that i think Art would easily understand. But like i said, i'm looking for opinions, because i like your guys taste in hats, and just from another hat wearer to another. I do have what i'd like in mind.

heres' the exact style and i love the ribbon work on this hat.

all right guys i'm posting the drawing, this is where i should have started, so i'd like the bash to be deep, and noticeable from the back, tell me your opinions on the design, and anything you would change. Why i am asking is not that i don't like the design, but because i'd like to know where you would take this design for yourself to help me finalize with some help from you guys. I know of course i should ask Art, but i wanted to take this to the lounge guys and girls first to get ideas or things i wouldn't have thought of and also to share my idea and show what i'd like Art to make me. Art of course you can reply to this picture. I'm just looking for opinions to just finalize any details, and i think you all would help in this, because i like the hats made for you guys from Art, so go at it, and also let me know what you think of the design.

now i wanted to do something very original, but keep in mind i'd like it to be 1930's ish, if its not thats still okay. So a classic look, not going towards modern at all.

neophyte thanks for the compliment, and yes i have been looking at band width and it does look a little small. I will post a final drawing, and when the hat is made i will post both at the same time, in this blog. So more opinions would be great, Neophyte thanks for your advice.

Beware, I don't know much about hats, especially historical hats. I can only tell you what I like from what I see, and I see a really cool-looking hat drawing that ought to become a really cool-looking hat lol. Looking forward to that final drawing.

i do like the borsalino como, the size of the brim is what i'm looking at, 2 in a half is a good size as mentioned above.

I like the most recent drawing. Thats about what I'm wanting for mine that I'm ordering as well. I like it quite well except I'd do a lower crown in the front above the pinches, but it looks good.

Yeah, I was gonna mention about the front being a bit too high.

I'm liking this latest sketch VERY much, coble. Shape-wise, I don't think there's much more you can do to improve on or personalize. I think now you'd only have to be concerned with color and ribbon width. If both of these are how you like it, I'd say this is gonna turn out to be a smashing good hat!

yes and color is the hardest part for me to decide, and ribbon, i love the design i have, but i'd like Art to do his talent as well. I'm glad you like the design, i will start messing with colors soon.

The thing about a hat like the one you've designed, it's just begging to stand out lol. I'd look around the Hall of Fame for some ideas on color.

I've always chosen the hat color and ribbon width, but told Art what kind of clothes I want to wear it with, and then left the ribbon design and color up to Art. He's really an artist, but he knows that you're going to wear the hat. So it would be good just to have a conversation with him. He's great at that.

That last drawing looks like a classic in the making. Personally, for felt color, I think nothing darker than Whiskey. It seems that lighter colors would flatter it more. I can't explain why, it;s just a gut feeling. [huh]

I'd love to see it in Blue Smoke, Powder Blue, or Pecan. But the advice above about matching to your wardrobe is sound. No point in owning a beautiful hat that doesn't match anything else you wear! :eusa_doh:
