Our British lookers-in may know this one

What, according to this 1932 music hall novelty, should you shout "whene'er you meet any pals"..."that's how you greet any pals"?

What's "not a beautiful word, but just a cute little word full of joy"?

(Hint: Once you have it, you also have the title of the song.)

Sorry Fletch, seems your "1932 music hall novelty" just about killed this thread. Where do come up with these antiquated gems?

Here's an easier 1932 lyric to identify.

"To you it may be old and sort of tumble down,
But it means a lot to folks in my home town."

"Just a Little Street Where Old Friends Meet," another great Isham Jones tune.

Here's one from 1933 -- an easy one if you're an Eddie Cantor fan:

"You'll drive him half insane -- in a bathing suit of cellophane!"

"Stay Young And Beautiful" from "Roman Scandals".

How's about this one:
"My poor heart gives a start like a Jitter Bug just won't stop
Mix your crooning with my spooning and let me blow my top.
"

You'll go (da-dee-da-dee-da-dee da and whoa dee doe dee doe)
That's what love is all about"

Actually, Bli-Blip is originally an Ellington thing. That's ok, though. Ella is the cat's PJ's.

That is "The Love Bug". Recorded by a number of artists; Billy Cotton springs immediately to mind.

Try identifying this tune....

"Your voice would thrill a nation, your face would be adored
You’d make a great sensation with wealth and fame your reward."

You Ought To Be In Pictures -- see Little Jack Little's 1933 Columbia recording for the definitive version. Rudy Vallee and the Stewart Sisters did a nice one as well.

Here's one from about the same vintage --

"She said I would know you by the blue in your eye
Fancy suit and checkered vest and polka dot tie..
You answer to that description
So I guess that you're the guy..."

I am certain that your song is "Annie Doesn't Live Here Anymore"
(lyrics by Joe Young & Johnny Burke, music by Harold Spina).

The song from 1933 originally had English lyrics, and was a hit for Guy Lombardo. A German version ("Fräulein Annie Wohnt Schon Lang Nicht Hier") was recorded by Marlene Dietrich. The song then faded from the airwaves and become quite obscure until Tony Randall sang it on the Tonight Show in the late '60s, giving it new life.

Identify this golden oldie!
"On every afternoon at one the sessions begin
And all the boys from all the bands come down and sit in
They sit around and knock each other out when they play"

Identify this lyric

"We're 3 tough .....from deep down Texas way.
We got no pals
They don't like the way we play.
We're a rough rootin tootin shootin trio
But you ought to see my sister Cleo
She's a terror make no error
But there ain't no nicer terror."

Pistol Packin Mamma.

What about this one?

"In olden days a
Glimpse of stocking was
Looked on as something
shocking. But now God knows...

Cole Porter's "Anything Goes"

"And the Hudson River, makes me start to quiver,
Like the latest flivver, that's simply dripping with chrome"

Ha ha ha..... you would recognize this if you listened to my show....

"He said my epidermis was darling,
And found my blood as blue as could be,
He went through wild ecstatics,
When I showed him my lymphatics,
But he never said he loved me."

Otherwise, you are in the know....

Some unfinished business, I see.

The 1932 vintage stumper I posted last December is a mindless bit of cheer called The "Oi" Song. Now this had nothing to do with punk rock yet, but "Oi!" was and is a common greeting among workingclass English and Irish folk.

Oi! (Oi!) Whene'er you meet any pals
Oi! (Oi!) That's how you greet any pals
When you're happy let the world know about it
Teacher - scholar - preacher - holler...

Ambrose and His Orchestra made the record. Hear a bit here. (Links to soundclips are down the page.)
There was also a record in Dutch (!) by a group called the Rhythm Brothers. This was posted on the web last year as RealAudio but has since disappeared without a trace.

That done with, here's a hit of the following year for you to guess. It was a favorite of some standing well into the '50s.

Why is it you came into my life
And made it complete?
You gave me just a taste of high life
If this is love, then I repeat...

...what does the singer repeat? The title.
