My son's first suit

[Two Types]

Here's my son in his first suit. It was made by a tailor in Ilford in 1963. It's a bit big for him but he'll soon grow into it. The condition is fantastic. He sorted through an old bag of ties and picked out a 1960s tie from John Collier - exactly the right style to go with the suit.

I love this style of suit: the trousers are still relatively high waisted (i.e. cut in the old style, no belt loops, fob pocket, braces buttons) and it is modern enough not to look too retro but old enough not to look all skinny and mod.

And he chose to wear a tab collar shirt.

As long as it fits still a bit loose it has a 50´s look to it.

Well, I let him sort through a bag of ties and he picked out some brilliant ones - all of them would have been perfect for that suit (although he rejected an orange square-end 1960s tie that I thought was great).

The genes run strong in your bloodline TT, any friends and family who hadn't seen him for a while wouldn't mistake him for anyone other than your boy! The suit, tie and shoes look great on him. You must be very proud.

Great start. I only got into suits in my late 20s. Not that it would make any difference. I gained quite a few pounds since I was his age. The suits wouldn't fit anymore.

You are right about the comparable modern look of this suit. For the trained eye the difference will be noticeable (in a good way) and for all the others its just a good looking suit.

Thanks for the positive comments. I wish 'd had a suit like that when I was his age. When i was a teenager i wanted stylish sixties suits but all i could find were old 1930s stuff! If only I'd known!

Its a good suit for him and he looks very smart: His hair cut compliments the suit , did he get that to go with the suit or is that his normal cut?

Can he be persuaded to endure more photographs, back and front without the coat?

What pockets inside the coat at that date?

Cheers. That's his normal haircut. It's our day out - trip to the barbers, then lunch and a spot of book shopping. I'm looking forward to the days when he's old enough to go for a pint as well.
I'll see if I can get more photos after the weekend (he's away rowing Saturday & Sunday).

It has that very clean look I associate with the later fifties, the kind of stuff Reggie & Ronnie wore (I don't buy into their myth, but they always looked sharp).

I too was surprised at it having two pockets, unless the left one was a ticket pocket which was common throughout the 1950s, disappearing by the 1970s on RTW but now very much back in vogue on such things. On MTM and bespoke it has never really disappeared. The answer may well be as you surmise in the MTM nature of this garment which was ahead of its time in that respect. It will be interesting to learn how the young man uses the pockets especially the trouser fob pocket and inner pockets- in the way of the times or in the current idiom as far as is possible.

Two Types, would your son not pose? It would be interesting to see the detail and also how he gets on with the style of the day - pockets, does he use the fob pocket etc.? He must, for better or worse, have to wear 'current' styles for school etc., so a comparison would be interesting. It is rare that this is possible.

Congratulations TT - there aren't many teenage boys who can inhabit a suit without looking like they have been belted into a strait jacket against their will. Your son clearly pulls it off. And the fit is impeccable, as I'd expect with you as his tutor.

I think it's a little bigger for his size. Consider using the savile row guys. They make suits that perfectly fits.
