I'm really interested in you saying the roadster is a closer fit that the highwayman, I just assumed AL just preferred people to essentially size down and thats the way they did their sizing...so its actually a different cut?

You mean size UP, right? But as far as I can see - and I obviously can't speak on behalf of AL - with a roadster there's no need to size up or down. All I was saying is that when you buy one if you buy your correct size it'll be a fitted jacket i.e. not at all loose. Whereas if you buy a highwayman in the same size there'll be a lot more room in there.

I once heard aero Holly describe the 50s halfbelt and Hercules jackets as 'oversized patterns' and in my experience the same is true of the highwayman.

So in summary these jackets aren't the same thing. If you want one to pack a few layers under then you're better off with a highwayman and if you want a closer more fitted style then go for a roadster

Oh, don't stop now...

well, alright then, I guess I can. I just meant not in an official capacity.

But for the record since I'm not part of an AL secret sewing circle or suchlike I obviously am free to say whatever I want whenever I like on any given topic. Not having someone to tell me what I should and should not talk about is great, I like it very much. Yes siree, I definitely do enjoy my impartial observer status. In fact, I recommend it

I didn't meant to imply you shouldn't be able to zip it up, just that its my impression that most would wear this type of jacket unzipped most of the time.

Don't know about AL but roadsters are certainly a different cut and much more form-hugging. Same situation when comparing a 20's-30's jacket cut to a '50s one ('50s being much more relaxed). That's one of the reasons it's so hard to judge sizes. If you really want to be sure the best way is to get a list of actual measurements of a particular garment and then compare those to your body measurements or even better, with an item you already own. I occasionally purchase vintage clothing and every serious seller there will list actual item measurements as a size 38 on a '30s piece can in no way be compared to a modern day size 38.

Agree with Schitzo that if you're looking for perfection one inch can make a lot of difference in appearance.

San Pedro>Pasadena.

I've only been to LA once, and that's by choice, about 8 yrs. ago and I was working at LAX most of the time, but I did notice that the people were just like the NYC assholes I'm used to, but more mexicanish. I felt right at home, sort of in a west coast kind of way, every thing was just as expensive and shitty as I'm used to but without the east coast patina and old world charm that is New York. The marine layer crap and then the blistering 1,000,000 degree heat really made my day(s) just peachy. I'll pass thanks, sucked all the way, left a day early and i'll never go back to that hell on the beach.

You guys all be nice. See black leather causes commotion. Tatoos, weed all kinds of mischief talk.
Xenophon, I said an inch can make the difference when looking for a prefect fit. Maybe Schitzo did too. Who knows.
Good to see some good leather jacket discussion going. Drama, I get enough of that living with a female.
Hope my wife doesn't read this. Ha!
