Well, I just won this whippet off of ebay! My first whippet. Looks like it needs a little love and care but I'm excited. Any idea what year this would be? I don't know the year range that stetson put out the whippets.

Sincerely,
Rob

Nice. It looks like you can have that in good shape fairly easily. It kind of looks like this Whippet:
1951-Stetson-Whippet-Gray.jpg

My guess is that it is from the 1950s. The ad is from 1951 so that gives you an idea of what they were making then.
From what I can gather, Stetson made the Whippet in that form from the 1940s until the end of the 1950s. In the 1960s they created the Whippet II which is a horrible looking stingy brim--in my opinion of course. :p You have a good example that should last you for a very long time. It lasted this long so it has to last at least that much longer. ;)

Regards to all,

J

That certainly looks like the same brim width and bound edge for the hat. When I get it and clean it up I'll be sure to post pictures and see how it matches up!

Sincerely,
Rob

Oh man, I had a light gray Whippet once, it was just a little small for me so, I used it as trade for a nicer fedora with Matt Deckard I believe. Any way, if I still had it, I would offer it to you Ray. It was a size 7 1/8 which some fit ok but this one was not going to be the right fit. I know, stretch it JP would say, well, I don't like to do that unless I have no alternative.;)

Still looking for a good Whippet in a size 7 1/4 *Sigh*.

Good job and good price there friend! You did well! See, ebay isn't all that bad!

Great lookin' whippet. The color is just what I have been looking for (size too!). Enjoy it.

I have brown one that is my everday hat.

Good find!

Nice find, you'll love it. Mine is very similar, I love these hats and wish I could find a brown one in good shape. Here's what it'll look like reshaped and cleaned up.

Quite a steal, Siirous! I don't have one yet, but I guess I'll just have to keep bidding on them when they come up - right Johnnysan?? ;)

ABSOLUTELY...never say never! I thought I'd still be looking for one years from now, but thanks to a fellow lounge member, I have an absolutely gorgeous whippet of my own! It is BY FAR my favorite hat - vintage or otherwise! Dave Keith will always have a fond place in my heart! :)

In case y'all missed it in a previous post, here's a photo of all three of my whippets...

Good for you!

Welcome to the club! I have a dark brown Whippet that was NOS when I bought it (it's in my picture) and I recently won an auction for my second Whippet, also NOS, from a department store in Kansas that went out of business after 100 years: LINK.

My new one is light grey, and my wife says it looks much better on me than the brown one - she even said I ought to sell the brown one! Hmmm. These are wonderful hats, and I'm not sure I want to give one up.

So that this post doesn't become a thread hijack - a question that might help both of us with new Whippets: do you folks here prefer to shape the crown yourself, or have it done professionally? I took my brown Whippet to the Greely Hatworks, which is about 20 miles from here. They've been around for almost 100 years and have equipment that dates back to their founding - incredible place for hat work. They formed the pinch-front for me. I'm thinking of having the same done for the light grey one.

Comments?

The brown one looks fine and I like the way it looks so having it blocked professionally looks pretty good to me. ;) I prefer having it done professionally because hatters can get the rake of the crown from front to back better than I can. This is when the crown is taller at the front and slopes down toward the back. It looks great with a C Crown or a Teardrop block. Of course this is just my opinion and some like to hand shape better. Crisp lines look better to me that's all.

Regards to all,

J

Thanks for the kind replies all! I can't wait till it comes in. I'm thinking it will arrive by tuesday or wednesday so then I can post some pictures. I don't know what condition it really is in, so I'm hoping it's alright. I put a note for the seller to ship in a box plenty big enough to avoid the "Vintage in a Shoebox" scenario that I know a couple of you have encountered.

Sincerely,
Rob

It's here!

The whippet finally came, a little steam and a brush around took off most dirt, it's in really good shape. The seller was really good, extremely well packaged and even included a christmas card in the bundle - So if you buy something from usmcmars fear not!

The last photo is a little off center from trying to photograph myself on my own, apologies  The color is most closely represented in photo #4. It's a wider brim than I'm used too, so I don't know how I feel about it yet. It's going to take a little getting used to. When I have the spare change laying around I will probably send it out to get reblocked by a pro.

Sincerely,
Rob
