I first saw them at Farm Aid in Indy in 1990. It was evident as soon as they hit the stage the were a Big Rock Band. They did, I think three tunes and were great. I saw them again, maybe a year or so later here in Dayton. It was a very good show, and Slash impressed me as having a great depth of musical knowledge - as evidenced by how he played as much as what he played.

I've been to ~300 arena rock type shows, and countless smaller venue shows; it's easier to tell you who I haven't seen than who I have. When you see Rock Stars, you know it. When I saw GnR, they were definitely Rock Stars.

I love Guns ... I put them up there with any rock band in history when they were firing on all cylinders ... they were a force of nature no doubt

but the band I see on the footage from Ritz in '87 and '88 is in no way shape or form the band I saw in Giants Stadium in 1991

they were a shell of themselves and clearly feuding ... and the music was completely different ... I think they played 3 songs from Appetite ... disappointing
it felt like an Elton John concert ... nothing against Elton ... Love him as well ... but I went to see Guns

I would have probably kicked a puppy to see that original line up ... just never got the chance

I'm not much on their history, but by the Wiki page, this is the band I saw. In fact, this is the first night. I saw them on the second.

Farm Aid was cool. Where else ya gonna see GnR, CSN&Y, Bill Monroe and Elton?

I was a roadie for my friend's band in the mid '80's while they were playing all the clubs on the Sunset Strip. One night this band went on before us and they were terrible. The name? Guns N Roses. It was their very first show together. Glad they got better.

I never got to see the Appetite line up ... by the time I saw them Steven Alder and Izzy were gone and they had moved on to the piano rock sound of Use Your Illusion ... I always liked the rawness of the Appetite sound much better

when I saw them Slash was fantastic and flawless ... but the band as a whole was uninspired and bland ... and Axl was pretty horrible and seemed completely disinterested ... he also left the stage early two nights in a row and the band kept playing for about 30 minutes looking around as if to say ...oh no not again

Individually, they were all fine players. Collectively they were terrible. I don't know if it was Axl's issues or what, but they looked and sounded like a neighborhood garage band in the first rehearsal. I've seen "tighter" bands in a school talent show.

his finger style was second to none ... I always had a soft spot for his Home At Last album

Wow, hadn't heard about Mack either. I had the chance to meet him 30 or so years ago, back in my roadie days, and he was a very nice gentleman, in addition to a fantastic musician. RIP.

One of these days all there will be is prepackaged Disney groups who can't write, don't play an instrument, can't really sing, but they sure can dance in front of a green screen. And that sells products.

that won't ever happen

it may be what sells most ... but then again it almost always has ...

but there will always be true artists ... we just may have to dig a little deeper to find them because the entire industry is different

back in the day you got a 4 or 5 album deal and the company let you see out your contract ... sometimes a group or artist wouldn't reach anyone until there 5th album

today you are lucky if you get past one single on a deal

some of the greatest artists that have ever been would never be heard of if they came out today for that very reason

the true artists will always be around ... just in a more grass roots way and being spread by word of mouth and via the internet and not the radio and large promotion like back in the day
