Great video! What size dome did you order in relation to your hat size to keep from causing a line from the sweatband on the block?

I wear a 58 and HatShapers' method of stating a 58 is Small + 1/4. Sounds a bit odd, but it is actually a description of how they make them.

All I wanted was to press the old crease out. I have seen a lot of odd tools, but this seemed much more convenient. It doubles as a hat stand/form in its spare time.

A larger block might work better for a complete reblock but I am only trying to ease the old shape out of the top. This is not all that difficult and does not require the removal of the sweat band. If a larger block is used, the sweat needs to come out or the extra material of the sweat band will cause the felt body to be stretched in that area and make a mess of the hat.

So far, I have avoided that.

I just called and spoke with them for a while and we came up with a plan based upon what I wanted to do. Learned a bit and enjoyed the process.

I thought this might be a cool idea.

maybe we can each make a quick vid of how we bash/crease our hats.

some like an almost sloppy natural looking crease
some like a neat symmetrical carefully formed crease
a lot of us like both ...

whatever you do ... I'd like to see you doing it in motion

I also thought it may help get a better idea of the personalities of people I talk/type to pretty much every day.

I just now threw my phone up on a music stand ... hit record ... and filmed an off the cuff vid of me throwing in a couple diamond creases.

Theoretically you could wear a blouse while shooting the vid. How ever - and with what - you put in the front pinches, I'll promise to concentrate on the hat (he lied!)

I personally dislike the idea of a block (as in "one single block") or a hatshaper for maintaining my hats. I have bought a lot of different hats, because they are ... different.

If I block 10 of them on one and the same block/shaper, I would end up with 10 hats with the exact same silhouette. Why would I want that?

In my World that would not be less of a pity than cutting a 2-3/4" brim down to 1-3/4". Just my 0.02

I have not tried it and would be a bit hesitant to do so unless it were padded with canvas or leather - likely damp. This was actually my thinking when ordering this size. I can pad to make it function for a larger or padded need, but reducing would be a serious problem.

But I have not needed to iron - just pressed them on wet and let dry a bit. The felt takes the dome shape pretty readily as can be seen with my Amish hat that was a stand in when I lost a critical video segment of the RM Williams being domed. Was not willing to redo all of that on the new hat.

As I said in the video, my plan was to let it set for the night, but I went back only a few hours later and found it was ready for the new crease. It was a very shallow crease to remove, so things went a lot quicker than expected.

As to pre-formed hatshapers, I agree. But the point of the high walled straight sided dome is not to have the block create your new crown shape, but to get back to a clean dome so you can obtain your own shape by hand.

I think that nobody would mistake my hats as pre-formed on a hatshaper block:

My point is that the shape of the open crown change a lot between hat models. The specific shape of the original block is often a very defining factor in the look and style of a specific model.

I don't say, that the job will not look good. The hat may very well obtain a look, quite different from the original look, though
