Milkshake anyone?

Great idea for a topic! Down here in San Diego, I have a few places I like to go when I am looking for a really good milkshake.

1.) Ruby's Diner
rubys_san_diego.gif

In Mission Valley Center, there is a Ruby's which is a recreation of the 1939 New York World's Fair Pavillion. Sure, it's in the center of a mall, but nonetheless, still a great atmosphere, and a GREAT chocolate shake.

You can actually get a 360 degree tour of this diner at: http://www.rubys.com/diners/360sd.html. It's the last option on the pull-down menu.

2.) Corvette Diner

Another nostalgia filled 50's era diner. This place has even more atmosphere than Ruby's. The waiters and waitresses are dressed in vintage server attire (like Ruby's), and there's music and all sorts of other things, as well as a big Corvette in the middle of the joint. This place makes a MEAN chocolate malt. Another one of my faves.

Mmm!

I do like milkshakes. Those in NoCal are commanded to stop at "Phyllis's Giant Burgers" on 4th Street in San Rafael. The coffee milkshakes are liquid nirvana. In San Freakcisco, Whiz Burger's shakes are pretty good.

Aww, I wish there were still drugstore soda fountains like long ago; they seemed so cute!

Oh, an old store's saying just came to mind: Good health to all, from Rexall! :D

Wow I haven't had a milkshake in a long time. When I was a kid, my dad used to take me to this diner, we would go after church and after doctor's appointment. They made great shakes, I always got vanilla, they had one of those huge old green milkshake machines. My dad would get an egg cream. Sadly, they're not around anymore.

Junior's in Brooklyn make a pretty good milkshake.

I'm not a huge milkshake drinker, but the best I ever had was at my uncle's drugstore in Loogootee, Indiana.

Sadly, both are no longer with us.

Best shakes -- which, up here, we call "frappes" -- I've ever had are from a tiny little roadside stand in Haverhill, Massachusetts called "Carter's Ice Cream." There is nothing stylish or contrived or manufactured about the place -- it's just a low wooden box by the side of the road with walk-up service windows -- but they make all their own ice cream right on the premises, and their shakes and floats are absolutely exquisite. Whenever I go down to visit my best friend, the visit's not complete till we've stopped at Carters.

Support your local independent ice cream stand! Have a frappe today!

There is! You just have to go to Pittsburgh.

Klavon's Ice Cream

This place has all of the best

, like malts, floats, shakes, egg creams, phosphates, everything. It's all made using the same equipment that has been there since the store opened in the 20s. They even try to preserve the flavor of the place by selling all the candy that was popular back then, like Neco wafers, candy cigarettes, etc.

1938 Waring!

Well, I've had shakes in may places... some good some ok... never met a shake I didn't likelol But, I've always enjoyed IN-N-OUT Shakes... I'm a strawberry flavor man! I love Ruby's, they have to have the best shake I've had out... but, when it comes to shakes... my 1938 Waring blender makes some killer shakes! I just toss some frozen strawberries in, and some vanilla Brayers all natural... then turn it on! That thing blends pretty well! I have impressed quite a few friends with my little vintage blender... she really gets the job done! And makes a killer shake!

Next time I have company, I'll make some... you'll see what I mean!

Anyway....

I don't really find In-N-Out shakes to be all that great when compared with other offerings, really. They're nice and all, but they just don't compare with a Ruby's shake, or a Corvette shake, Laurel & Hardy style (not to mention the local mom & pop spots other states have, too).

I find IN-N-OUT shakes better then most other "fast food" styled shakes... you'll get a better shake at a diner with out a question... Jack in a Box has a good shake... I just remembered! I enjoy their shakes. I like the fact that they're thick, don't like real runny shakes.

You're right, Strider,, nothing beats a good shake, or better yet a malt, IMHO, made from scratch and served in a tall soda fountain glass. Hmmm, makes me want to go get one right now! One thing I miss about the Midwest is Steak 'n Shake. Very similar to Ruby's, with all the cooks wearing the paper fore-and-aft caps, real plates, and hand-dipped ice cream. Absolutely fabulous malts, too. We had one about a half mile from our apartment in Muncie (Indiana). They got a lot of our money!

But sometimes it's nice just to zip into In-N-Out and grab a shake when the wife is dragging you to the fifth shoe store that day. You know it's going to be good, no matter where you are. Sometimes that's all I need to make it through the day!

In'n'Out'n'Other

In'n'Out, I'm pretty sure (in accordance with their "we use fresh real food" philosophy) unlike most chains, uses real ice cream in their shakes.
I forgot we have a real soda fountain in San Francisco: the "St. Francis" at 24th and York:

...including a "vintage rotary phone in the wood-paneled phone booth"!

Somebody could put together a nice road trip with all these recommendations :)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

I've had moments like Jack has, too. Grab a chocolate shake at In-n-Out, and you're good to go!

I've seen a few other fast food establishments offering "hand scooped ice cream shakes" lately. Carl's Jr. comes to mind. There's a place out here called "Fatburger", too, which I've seen hand scoop their ice cream.

You know, I've had Jr's so called hand scooped shakes... not impressed! As I said once that I like thick shakes... they're shakes are always on the runny side for some reason... now, they do top them off with whipped cream though... that's not so bad!

Oh, when it comes to bad shakes at a "Sit down" establishment... Denny's is one of the worst... well, they can be good some times or bad... depends on which one you go to... on an average, they miss the mark and some don't serve you the rest in the tin mixer tumbler!!! :rage: Now that's call for a slap! Give me my extra shake man; I paid $4 bucks for it... don't be stingy with my shake dude!!!
