I don’t live in the past and I don’t think that everything good has already been made: don’t be afraid to step out a bit. All your choices look good. Most all of us wear hats as a part of our style and not just for practical reasons. The ribbon allows you to match your hat with your wardrobe: which color best complements what you normally wear?

Hello Brent, regarding the colour choices, I pretty made up my mind, it will be between one of two in the samples Michael issued. Im partial to a bit of contrast, and my personal favourites were his old vintage ribbons: slate & ashen green.

My charcoal hat from him has the same ribbon, and I dig the variable undertones it has. Im curious if the ashen green does the same. Its my understanding that those older ribbons were a rayon/cotton blend, and that the type of rayon used is no longer made, or just incredibly rare to find.

I wear my hats in all weather, and though I look after them, I do work in them.

My granite hat from him has charcoal ribbon for crown and sweat, and I find i interesting how much the colours changed from wearing this summer, shifting from dark grey to a copper/green hue.

Thats part of my curiosity of the ribbon choices/experiences people have had, because I see the hat as an evolving work in progress, as it wears in, and builds character after taking its lumps from use.

I own a couple of Gannon's in natural, one has the Commando color ribbon in 13/16" ( I work in fractions & decimals). Keep in mind colors change depending on the lighting. And anyone's decision should depend on whether they are trying to clone a hat from an era or just be a fashionista.

Cheers.
Love the crown profile on that hat.

I'm not looking to clone any particular hat. Just a fan of Gannon's work, with much thanks to this site for that, and I enjoy seeing what the hats become over time as they wear in.

Likely a good chunk of Michael's ribbon stock was bought from Art @VS. I have a lot of it as well. It is wonderful ribbon and there is something about the vintage rayon that gives the vintage ribbon a much nicer hand. It is softer, more pliable. I have more modern cotton/rayon ribbon and while it is very acceptable, looks much the same, it is not as pliable and a little harder to work with. If you can find vintage European cotton/rayon/with a touch of silk in it to me that is the grail. It has an uncommon sheen to it and looks wonderful.

Daughter and I waiting for the wife to finish some shopping.
Just a couple more things to knock off the list before I give Michael a deposit for my Moss Green one. Can’t wait.

Moss green is a fantastic color and felt. My first custom fedora, in ‘07 or ‘08, was dark moss. I hardly wear it anymore because it has a dimensional brim. I didn’t know any better back then. It would be my favorite hat to this day if not for that, and I wore it almost every day for a couple years. Great color, really soft felt. Good luck with yours dude.

New hat day, and my first Gannon! This is based on his his Highwayman style, 6” open crown, 3 1/4” brim, western weight beaver natural color, sand color ribbon and brim binding. Just a beautiful hat all around and fits well; and most importantly the wife likes it. Michael truly is a master of his craft.

Michael finalised my hat's details, and went with his vintage Slate ribbon, with a single grey stitching along the brim. Michael blocked the hat 5 1/4in high on a #52block at 59.5 size with 2.5in brim. Very classic proportions. With the natural felt and that old ribbon, the hat looks like its from another time.

This is what came from Michael, and I just got her in the post today. I'll see about some other photos soon.

Once again, a huge thanks goes to Michael for his excellent work, and another huge thank you to all the contributors to this thread.
