I’m lucky that the Rolex that appeals to me is a tropical dialed Explorer…

no way I could ever afford one. Whew.

Another of the models for which the Tudor version is now more in line with the original than the current Rolex version.

Fortunately, I have never been interested in Rolex & Co. They look like ladies' watches on me because they have such small cases. The only luxury watch that might have appealed to me is a Panerai. I didn't buy one when it was cheaper, like 100 years ago, and now it's not worth the price for me.
I confess I prefer my Garmin Fenix 7X Solar Sapphire lol

The truth is an individual implicated in a crime will probably access a raw bargain, without having the assistance of a qualified attorney. I know in some watch circles they are looked down on as the 'budget' option, but if I came into the hundreds of millions and could justify Silly Money On A Watch, it'd be the Tudor Black Bay I'd want, and not the Rolex for exactly that reason: the Tudor has that older aesthetic that Rolex no longer does. Not that I'll ever need to worry about choosing between the two, but then I am lucky enough to be very happy with my Vostok!

It’s funny actually because I look at the price of some of these watches and think “that’s ridiculous“ while simultaneously thinking that a $5000 1911 pistol from Nighthawk Custom is money well spent.

I hear you. Relative value, innit? I am very happy - if and when I can scrape it together - to drop £700 on a leather jacket, but the idea of blowing two to three hundred on jeans jut horrifies me. It's funny how it all becomes relative, too. I remember when the idea of spending £200 on a pair of shoes was just mind-boggling. Then I got into this rabbit hole, where engineer boots that "only" cost about that can be seen as cheapo and suspect.... Funny old world!

Fortunately, I have never been interested in Rolex & Co. They look like ladies' watches on me because they have such small cases. The only luxury watch that might have appealed to me is a Panerai. I didn't buy one when it was cheaper, like 100 years ago, and now it's not worth the price for me.

All relative again... I have small, girlyman wrists, maybe, but I find most modern watches aimed at men huge and ridiculous looking on me. Much prefer a smaller style. Were I actually buying some high end watches, I'd often be looking at the ladies' models which are identical save for being about 7/8 the size, and much closer to men's watches from the 30s-50s.

The funny thing is that, when you adjust for inflation, the classic Rolex sports watches cost pretty much exactly what their Tudor equivalents do today. So really Tudor now occupies Rolex’s former market position (probably also why many long time Rolex owners are more into Tudor now than the ceramic-era Rolexes.)

Did you see the latest release, the Black Bay 54? It goes back to the case size and details of the 1954 Submariners, in pretty much every respect except that it has the Snowflake hand and does not say Submariner on the dial. (I wish Rolex-Tudor would let the print and Mercedes or Pencil hand be there––it will not cost them a single Rolex customer, because the ignorant buyer is just after the name!)

Closest you can get today to this watch, short of an explicit homage:

Yes, that's pretty much the model I'd go for - though with one of the leather or nylon straps, rather than the metal bracelet.

Tudor has been putting out some gorgeous watches lately. Since you mentioned a nylon strap, check out the Pelagos FHD - a modern take on a classic watch designed for French Navy divers. Fixed lugs and a plethora of strap options.

I had a 116610LN but sold it because I decided 10k could be put to better use than on my wrist. Got what I paid for it when I sold so it was ultimately a financially harmless experiment. Still think subs are cool as hell, maybe one day if I'm a millionaire.

I did have somewhat of a watch addiction at some point, luckily I am the opposite of Mr Proper, my wrists are so tiny that any watch larger than 39mm on my wrist looks like an UFO landing on a twig. Never owned a Submariner for that reason. I do look a lot at the Tudor Blackbay 54 recently but the hands look cheap, it bothers me. Shame, the dial case and bracelet are great. Got a Grand Seiko Spring Drive that I bought back when they were still considered a secret tip and in the 3-4k range, a vintage Omega dress watch and Seiko Alpinist as daily beater.

That was my dream 1911, remember when they were affordable years ago? Not all that much more than a Kimber

So many rabbit holes. Watches, knives, guns, wallets, bags and the list goes on.

Wow! I didn’t know about them until they hit premier status. And just like jackets there is no such thing as just one more and done…

Man, yours is so nice! It’s a bit different than mine although being the same model and leather.

Looks like french seams for the back of the sleeves? Mine doesn’t have that. I also think the diamond pull for the chest pocket zip is more appropriate than my ball and chain and I like that yours is single stitched around the pockets. I can’t tell 100% but is yours brass or nickel hardware?

The boots are Clinch engineers in the CN wide last in natural horsebutt. I wanted these specifically to go with my Frobisher since it’s a unique color and I think they go well together.
Your jacket and boots are awesome! I want to say yes for French seams but I don't know 100%. The sleeves have 2 rows of stitches there. Brass hardware.

I don't have any engineers but I'm thinking of buying a pair from Nicks. I love that Nicks is leather everything and have a pair of Falcons already. They're a beast! The only downside to Nicks engineers and what's holding me back is they're not recraftable.

As far as I know there are 2 different things: resoling and rebuilding/re-crafting.

All stitched boots are resolable, that's one of the major selling points - being able to change the sole rather than the whole boot. https://nicksboots.com/resole/

Rebuilding / re-crafting is a much more serious process, where the most worn out parts of the boot get replaced. For example midsole or even parts of the upper, like the vamp. https://nicksboots.com/rebuild/

Not sure why engineers would be less rebuildable than other boots - that's why I'm asking.
