I'm not opposed to that, but I am trying to distance myself from anything overtly "western".

You might also be limited by what Gannon can/will do. He doesn’t offer a wide range of options and/or styles and he might not want to try the leather hatband.

Part of what you’re paying for when you go with Gannon is his trained eye. You can often come out with the best hats by telling the hatter what your vision is and what the use will be and leaving most of the choices to them. It’s worked for me.

Michael says I'm about a month out. I'm excited. (Also my Birthday is late October, so it'll be perfect timing.) So far I've got Western Weight Felt in Charcoal, and the approximate dimensions. But I'm not 100% how I'll end up going on the Ribbon. Width? Color? Knot Type?
I realize you don't know me as I'm rather new around here, but anybody have any good ideas for Ribbon color with Charcoal felt? I own shirts in 3 Colors: OD Green, Black, and Charcoal'ish. That's about it.
The "theme" I've put to Michael is outdoorsy Fedora. Something you'd see someone hunting or camping wearing. View attachment 362597

Lots of choices.

You can always start with matching ribbon and brim edge.

Matching ribbon without the frayed ribbon edge.

With a hint of steel blue in the ribbon.

Cheers to you on your upcoming new hat day. Best, Eric -

I really like brim binding. And I’ve prepaid to that point. Certainly I think brim binding will match the ribbon.

Those are gorgeous by the way. Makes me think color matching the ribbon might not be too bad.

If it weren’t for other hobbies/projects I’d already be ordering a Moss Green just because. Maybe next year.

I like your thinking. I suggest receiving your new hat and jumping back in line. Green moss rocks!

To me, a thiner ribbon says "rural" or "outdoors" and I have two camp drafts that of course have ribbons thinner than the ones depicted by Eric, which I believe are in the more casual "playboy" style and might be a good spot between the clearly rural (to me anyway) style and the conventional urban fedora hatband. Take a look at what W.C. Fields did with the size of his hatbands, for contrast and amusement.

Eric’s hats are pure class and that ribbon width, whatever it is, is perfect. I’ll probably send Michael pictures of them saying: This!

Thanks! Gannon certainly makes a great hat. I normally like the binding to be tone-on-tone but the crown ribbon to have some contrast. On this hat, Michael said “…vintage ribbon and a great color. It goes very well with the cobalt blue felt, in fact I don't think I have ever seen a ribbon match with a felt color this well, they are practically the same color.” How could I say no?

One of my few criticisms I have of Gannon is that his photos are not very color accurate (he’s not alone on this). It’s a small criticism.
