it’s been my experience that Michael’s photos aren’t all that color accurate as viewed on my monitor.

At some point vintage genuine grosgrain hat ribbon is going to go from hard to find to impossible to find. For a while I thought of buying my own horde of ribbon, but the color and width options are overwhelming so I decided to leave it to the hatters.

I have slowly amassed about $3k in vintage ribbon and yes it is vexing because no matter how large the selection I have I keep discovering I don't that right colour in the right width. I guess that is why Art @VS had amassed somewhere around 50,000 yards of vintage ribbon. And I remember he didn't have the colour/width of ribbon I wanted with a hat I ordered from him. Collecting vintage ribbon becomes a very slippery slope.

Adding to the vexation is the fact the colors online can be deceiving. I've ordered more than one length of vintage ribbon looking for a particular color and width, only to find the color received is disappointing.

Here is Ashen Green that Michael put on my daughter's dark moss hat:

The crown ribbon on my dark moss hat is also labeled Ashen Green, as is the brim binding. Both were rolls from Art's VS inventory, sold on ebay by his wife. They are both different shades of green.

Yes, I have picked up 3 widths of the same named colour only to discover on receipt that they are 3 different colours. Sometimes very different so as not to be just different dye lots but totally different shades. When you add in the difficulties of discerning colour on a monitor well lets just say it is a crap shoot at best. But that Ashen green with the Moss is a stunning combo.....congrats.

It is impossible to photograph and she is tired of selling it and getting complaints about the colour not being right. So she offered it to my at no charge just to get it out of her shop.

It is impossible to photograph and she is tired of selling it and getting complaints about the colour not being right. So she offered it to my at no charge just to get it out of her shop.

I wonder if this is like the grey slate that Michael Gannon has. He also had a slate with red in it, but that's gone now. I have it on my natural Gannon, as do Brent and Bill. Randy has hats with the grey slate and the red slate.... IIRC.

Michael says I'm about a month out. I'm excited. (Also my Birthday is late October, so it'll be perfect timing.) So far I've got Western Weight Felt in Charcoal, and the approximate dimensions. But I'm not 100% how I'll end up going on the Ribbon. Width? Color? Knot Type?
I realize you don't know me as I'm rather new around here, but anybody have any good ideas for Ribbon color with Charcoal felt? I own shirts in 3 Colors: OD Green, Black, and Charcoal'ish. That's about it.
The "theme" I've put to Michael is outdoorsy Fedora. Something you'd see someone hunting or camping wearing.

Have you considered going with a leather band? Nothing too fancy, black bridle leather, 3/4". Top it off with a plain silver concho??
