The replacement hat made it. We tried to use some of the bluesmoke felt bodies that Brent had, but they were too small for the hat I wanted (6" x 2-3/4").

So Michael emailed a FEPSA beaver felt called gunsmoke. It's a darker grey with hints of blue in it. I went with the Lagoon ribbon again, which is kind of lavender-grey vintage ribbon.

I was impressed by how soft/maleable the crown is with this one. Very nice indeed.

I'll post Michael's pic first as it is closest to true colors. My cell phone camera just doesn't take decent pics anymore.

This is a dry crease. FEPSA felt definitely has some good feel to the hand and the bash-ability. Will still hit it with some steam to "set" the crease later on.

Wow, that looks to be a beautiful colour. I have a Cypress from Tim but may have to spring for this Gunsmoke too.

Part of a message from Michael:

“... I am just now getting to your spot on my list, I am running about a month behind schedule. I just underestimated how much the change of living situation and current state of things would impact my hat work.”

Seems like custom hatters are still busy, but perhaps having trouble getting components? I’m not in a hurry as it’s 102 degrees tomorrow and felt doesn’t sound very appealing right now.

I wonder when we’ll see Eric’s blue smoke Gannon...can’t be long now!

Always a pleasure to see your Gannons. You are no doubt responsible for many orders placed with Michael. I know I still reference your “Gannon tree” when thinking about colors.

Is your blue smoke getting close?

A recent email exchange with Michael finds him taking care of family matters. My hat is on pause in the que. ETA - I did not ask for a date. No worries for me - I will not go hat less. With my hat tree being quite full, I never will go hat less. ;)

As for the blue smoke beaver felt, I am still torn between various blue smoke hat dreams. Perhaps the delay is for the best as it makes "my heart grow fonder" for the New Hat Day.

Thanks for the evergreen hat rack compliment Brent. I hope this thread brings Mr.Gannon his due business. We have been supporters of Gannon Hats since nearly the beginning. The recent hats with unique characteristics surely showcase his talent. I say it here and frequently, that his hats are a dynamite value for an artisan quality hat.

Anywhoo, bring on the Gannon show folks. This thread needs some hat pics.

I hope Mr G is well and I hope he gets back to it soon, I am QUITE ready to give the man a call. Eric your hats are fantastic, I especially love the whiskey and the moss green.

Michael was evacuated from his home a couple weeks ago due to a wildland fire, but he’s back now. He said he’s running about a month behind usual and that his move to California has caused him some problems (tell me about it). He’s still taking orders and his queue isn’t bad compared with other hatters.

He's back in Portland, or back at the family place in CA?

I couldn't agree more. Under normal circumstances the Whiskey would be my choice without question, but that Moss Green is something special. In fact, Eric, I think all of your Gannons are spectacular. Maybe one of these days I might have to consult with Mr. Gannon.

Good morning folks.

I saw a magnificent hat on Michael's Instagram that is inbound to Brent. Man that hat has some seriously gorgeous gill work on it. It is a wow hat! Congrats to Michael and Brent on the collaboration.

The recently posted willow hued felt has me thinking carefully about a future commission. That felt and ribbon combo really pops. Another wow hat.

All in all, the Gannon Hat quality is certainly on the rise.

I would like to contribute some pics of a hat that will be coming soon to my hat rack - a Gannon Playboy. A Winchester blue-mist felt (thanks Brent) was used for this hat.

This hat is inspired by the venerable Stetson Playboy's. Those thin felts, lined and un-lined, with a smaller neat and tidy ribbon treatment also feature the stitched brim. My desires for such a hat are always piqued when I see the Playboy inspired blue smoke winchester felt hat that Hurricane Jack posts up. His hat is pictured below. The VS Playboy is a handsome hat.

It is truly one of my all-time fav hats on the lounge. Art Fawcett's magical hand is all over this hat - A Work of Art.

On with Gannon's efforts: The hat is open crown on the light weight felt. The insides are shown below.

A New Hat day will be sometime the upcoming week. The anticipation is high for this new Gannon Hat Company creation.

Cheers, Eric -

Stunning, Eric. It’s a simple kind of elegance that really speaks to me. Michael is making great hats even in the midst of adversity.

New hat day!
My first thought taking it out of the box was that the crown on this hat is thinner and more vintage-esque of any custom hat I’ve had my hands on. This is my fifth Gannon and this is a lot different from any of my others. I tried and was able to blow a crease into the crown! Michael asked if I wanted a thinner crown and I’m so glad I said yes.

All my photos here are with a dry crease that I popped into place in 30 seconds on the hood of my car. The open crown on this navy blue 100% beaver fedora is just over 6 inches and the bound brim is 3 inches. The ribbon is 2 inches wide and the gills are just what I asked Michael for. Absolutely stupendous hat...and the first fedora that I’m thinking about lowering the crown on. :)
You shouldn’t have favorite children, but this is my favorite Gannon!

I don’t know how many of you know this, but Michael’s father’s health declined and Michael moved out to Southern California to be with him. Micheal has been working on making hats in the less than ideal conditions he found himself in. In July his father passed away.

In his time in California, Michael has been evacuated at least twice that I know of due to wildfires. He’s gone through record setting high temperatures and has lived for periods without power due to the fires. His hat making has been a bit delayed due to these circumstances. However, he continues to promptly answer emails and bend over backwards to accommodate his customers. He doesn’t plan on staying long in California (who could blame him?), but it doesn’t seem set in stone that he’ll return to Oregon.

I want to thank Michael for his kindness and his professionalism. He is an artist, and gifted one at that, but more important he’s a gentleman.
