GoodGodYouGotAGreatGannon! Welcome to the club. The longer you have it, the harder it is to take it off! After a few times on your head, it feels like an old friend.

I love my Stetsons but I feel like this is really more something that will be rotating around more often with my wardrobe eek. It's funny every time I get a new hat I'm like this is my new favorite haha

It took a lot of adjustments and a lot of last minute changes and me being not sure about the color and style and even the sweatband and the lining was a whole thing but now that it's finished, it's perfect!

I just got more hooks and added to my original collection (which was just the 3 hooks on the left before.

Just got my first Gannon!
the felt quality is good but not the best (I'm comparing to the swatches I got from Hornskov, but that's European felt and he had very limited color selection). This isn't a comment on his craftsmanship, just an observation, I was told it's Winchester american felt and it's just not quite as nice of a touch and finish but I'm nit picking.

Overall I'm very happy with the hat. Michael was patient, upfront, very clear communication, detailed oriented and always responded to any questions and brought up any concerns he had or wanted to clarify, even the tiniest of details. I am a very detail oriented person, so this delights me. My other experience with 2 other local hatters (now that I know hats were really subpar craftsmanship and materials) would get upset with me if I asked "too many questions" or pointed something out.

I got a Western weight beaver felt silverbelly, 3inch flat brim raw edge with a 6 lignes silverbelly ribbon.
Black sweat band, black lining.
The crease is a mix of a Dakota/Canadian with a slight pinch (inspired by a hat I saw from Olivia Wilde wear).
Here she is! I can't wait to wear her out
this is a mix of some photos he sent me and some of my photos I took real quick.
Beautiful hat Jessie.

JJ; That is a swell hat! I love the mid ribbon treatment and flat brim. Classy and easy to wear downtown and country, IMO. The crease and pinches are perfect. Wear it proudly.

Congrats again. Planning a second hat?
Best, Eric -

Oh boy not yet, I hope. I have 6 now in total, went from 1 > 6 in under a year and have spent ~ 1600$ on hats which I know is nothing here but this is an expensive hobby! And I do love quality over quantity so I'm hoping just a few that I absolutely love will be enough. If I get something else in the future, it might be a more fun color rabbit fur felt from Hornskov (I have samples and it's so soft and he usually has colors more than basics). But I'm quite a simple neutrals kind of gal.

I got a lot of compliments and this color silverbelly is exactly what was missing to complement the lighter clothes in my wardrobe (basically white) that the Stetson 7X can't quite do. I love that hat but it's much more of a statement piece I have to plan my wardrobe around I find than with this hat, I can top it off and it'll likely work, probably because it has less color and more grey tones in it than the Stetson.

Here is what I wore it with today, I've been wanting to wear this outfit for a long time, but I didn't have the hat.

Looks great, this man's hat's are all stunners. Is that a 3" brim?

I got a few photos today that have me pretty excited. It was looking like my hat was going to take some time due to felt availability - but as dumb luck would have it my size was written down wrong and boom!

Going with a Dark Moss with Cactus ribbon and brim binding 5 1/2 open crown 2 7/8 brim. Just trying to decide if I should put some curl on the brim like his highwayman or just keep it as a classic flanged brim. What do you guys think?

Luckily, you can’t go wrong other way. If it’s dress weight felt, I think the curl gives the brim more strength and structure when you go with wider widths.

Looking forward to seeing photos of the completed hat in natural light!

Love the hat! Your signature states you are a 6 7/8 - certainly one of the dream sized heads when looking for pristine condition vintage fedoras. You sure can get more modern customs made for yourself in the $300 range - but holy cow doing a search on Ebay for vintage in your size brings up a bunch of perfect condition stuff for 70% less. I am jealous being a 7 5/8. My vintage market is significantly smaller than yours and the prices are significantly higher.
keep up the great hat collection and hello from a fellow Montrealer.

Yes, my wife is a 6 7/8 and I have purchased numerous vintage hats for her over the years. Never being willing to learn the lesson that she doesn't like the look of most men's hats. But I couldn't resist buying such great hats usually under $50. Didn't really matter that she didn't wear them at least I received the thrill of the hunt and purchase that I usually can't get at a fat 7 3/8.

Hi from Montreal.
I have been told that many times here hehe. Quite the envy, I've always known I had a small head but I'm a small person (well I'm average according to Wikipedia) who knew that would play to my advantage! As soon as I came on this forum, I acquired 3 Stetsons very quickly and I was not prepared for that in terms of knowledge and even spending money on them that quickly. But I'm glad I did!

Now it's just about not getting more. My coworkers think it's funny and they keep going how many hats do you have? And call it a hobby which I guess it is. But I am also good at limiting myself with "basics" and I don't wear my hats every day either so I get what I feel is necessary for my wardrobe and wants. I think I'm good with what I have now (geez I hope).

  • Stetson 7x 1950s silverbelly ~3in
  • Stetson 1930s black ~2.5in
  • Stetson 1940s 3x grey ~3in
  • Gannon custom light silverbelly (grayish) ~3in
  • 2 cheaper customs rabbit/hare I got made in Montreal (my first customs and gateway into hats after moving on from the cheap wool hats) that I wear for music festivals or occasionally but they have been pushed very far aside now that I have these other babies.

DETAILS
I got a Western weight beaver felt silverbelly
3inch flat brim raw edge with a 6 lignes silverbelly ribbon.
Black sweat band, black lining
The crease is a mix of a Dakota/Canadian with a slight pinch (inspired by a hat I saw from Olivia Wilde wear) and a Donkey kick dent front? I can't recall what it's called.

you may have preferred dress weight to western weight ... western weight is never very cooperative and quite unenjoyable for me from any manufacturer

very nice piece

You mean in terms of finish and hand feel and working with it?
I needed Western weight because I wanted a 3 inch flat brim raw edge.

Did you check with Michael? With your head size they should be able to get a 3" brim out of a dress weight felt. I have a fat 7 3/8 almost 7 1/2 head and I can get a 2 7/8 raw edge from a dress weight.

A great collection but if you are like everyone here in the FL it is just the start. Enjoy it. As you know it's great fun acquiring hats.

I mean in every way

I have a 3" flat brim with a raw edge from Michael in dress weight ... had for probably close to 4 years now and never had an issue.
... though it does have a slight pencil curl ... which I don't think make a whole lot of difference.
might be worth a try if you venture another Gannon

It is Michael who suggested going with the Western Weight. The curled pencil brim absolutely makes a difference to the structural integrity of the hat. I thought about putting one in my hat but I decided against it.

And other hatters I spoke to in Europe also said it would be impossible to achieve with the dress weight.
