Ive been trawling the web. Im looking for a soft felt fedora with not too wide a brim, fully lined in either mid or light grey and not expensive. Purely to go with suits especially in the spring and summer, therefore lighter grey prefered. Any suggestions?

It just takes patience and luck to get one at a fair price.

How soft do you want, V?

Are you talking about crushable soft, or just not cowbay hat hard?
If Aaron doesn't have what you're looking for, Millerhats.com is a big site. They carry a few name brands, but their own brand is made by Biltmore. Nice hats, not overly expensive, but still hover around the $100 mark. I'd go with a Miller before paying full price for a Stetson, but if you can find a Stetson you like on Ebay, they do have some nice looking dress hats.
Otherwise, there's Ebay for vintage.

Akubra Stylemaster and Federation

Zach R. said:
I've been eyeing the Stylemaster, does it have the same crown height as the Federation?

Zach R: Here's a side-by-side prepared for me by Ron at Hatsdirect:

They are two very different hats - the Stylemaster is a modern Fedora whereas the Fed is a pre WW2 style.

Main differences are

taper Fed has little, Stylemaster more
crown height, Fed is tall relative to Stylemaster which is 4"
Other factors are brim size, bound edge,
Carbon Grey and Steel Grey are the same, why - you need to ask Akubra
felts are the same grade, the Stylemaster is slightly thinner than the Fed due to the smaller size of the hat. There is no quality issue with the thinner felt. The Fed is a little softer in the crown to allow for shaping

Hope this helps,

Sardou
