I prefer the older style rather than the newer Western hats with lower crowns & a lot of them have dimensional brims. And the ugly shovel.

Ha! Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE around here; working cowboys and others are sporting those flat shovel-front brims. Our local western outfitter's hat selection is at least 75% that style. When did that become a thing anyhow and in what way is it utilitarian? Maybe it's to echo the profile of those wide-square toed (chinese) boots they all wear.

I'm a fan of the PBR & I think the shovel originated with rodeo competitors, specifically with the bull riders. I believe that's where I saw it first. But I might have already been behind the curve.

On the street it seems the other style is to take the dimensional brim & bring the fenders so far forward that it almost becomes a 3-sided hat, looks sort of like a guitar pick from the top.

Hello All,
I bought this fedora at an estate sale for my dad but he doesn't like it. Now I am thinking about selling it so I can get him a different one. I just don't know the style as there is not tag inside. I think it is a herringbone. If you need more photos, let me know.

There are a great many of this type of hat on Ebay. You could list there if you have the time and energy to see what you can get but IMHO it is only worth a few bucks and not worth the time.

Can you see how it has seams from where the different pieces were sewn together to make the hat? That is almost always a sign of an inexpensive hat. Nothing wrong with it if you like it. It was probably made as a seasonal fashion piece.

The better quality hats will be one piece of felt. Normally, wool felt is used on lower end hats and fur felt is used on better hats. In addition to the material and construction, your hat has a relatively low crown and narrow (stingy) brim. This is a trendy fashion accessory type of hat and not normally the type of hat preferred here on the Lounge.

What’s most important is if you like it. If you hang around here you’ll see a parade of hats and see how they look on their owners.

It's a cloth trilby, often but not exclusively, made from tweed. Your hat has a leather sweatband which puts it above the average, also I would say it's made from some kind of Glencheck rather than heringone but as stated earlier, for the price you'd get & the time needed to find a buyer, it just isn't worth trying to sell it.

It is Black Antica Casa 1857 nel Alessandria SOAVE nettuno
It is still Mint Condition; Never worn; with original tags, box, and plastic wrapping.
I am attaching as many picture as I can to the post.
I would appreciate any assistance/information/etc about this hat. I have been not been able to find anything about this hat to truly understand its history and signifance.

Doesn't strike me as particularly old.

That hat shop still exists, maybe someone there remembers around what time that model was produced.

Welcome to the Lounge. I’m sorry to hear of your grandfather’s passing.

I don’t know how much “history” or “significance” this hat has. It appears to be a recent manufactured hat. It does have nice brim edge stitching and what looks to be a brim slightly wider than three inches. Often such hats were made for a religious market.

It’s a fine quality hat that should be worn if it’s your size and you are inclined to wear hats.

Borsalino made an incredible variety of hats and their high quality makes them favorites here. We have a thread called The Borsalino Brotherhood where you can post photos and ask specific questions if you have any.

I just submitted everything to Borsalino about 30 minutes ago.
I have spent the last 1 month contacting every hat specialist I could locate or get a hold of.
The issues they ran into were:
1) There were no comparisons across any database.
2) Theoretically speaking; All the evidence points to this hat being one of the first generation hats made within the first
Year Barsolina and his brother opened up their first shop in Alessandria.
3) They have never seen a Vintage Hat in such prestine Mint condition, with the tags/box/ plastic wrap / and perfectly cared
for and maintained condition

The only comparison they could find was that what would be believed to be the brand new edition most closely equivalent and it was priced at $1095.

I'm perplexed as to why you would come to a website known for people with some expertise regarding vintage hats, feigning to want knowledge about a family heirloom but actually already have it listed for sale at a ridiculous price.

Did you really think your story would fly here?

It's a relatively modern hat. There's nothing exceptional about it. IF it were sized for an adult, the value might be around $75. At 55 cm, it wouldn't even fit my daughter and if it did, being black in color, I still wouldn't offer you more than $25.

I question the knowledge of your appraisers. That is a fairly modern hat. No way is it first year production.

I would welcome pictures of your appraisals as well. Just so I can avoid those people in the future.

that is nonsense. Whomever appraised that as a "first generation" Borso is a moron. I doubt it's even from the original factory.
